Default Padmaavat - Read full box office analysis

Padmaavat is Bollywood's most profitable period drama ever and here's proof - read full box office analysis

Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor‘s Padmaavat hit the screens on January 25 and it instantly set the box office on fire. The film not only impressed one and all, but also minted a large amount of money. After the third weekend, the film has entered the Rs 250 crore club and also become the first period drama to do so. But that’s not the end of the film’s achievements. With this latest record, Padmaavat has proved that period dramas can also mint money, while also breaking the old age misconception that such films can’t make huge profits!

Bollywood has always been about masala entertainers with the over the top action sequences and superstars being the faces of films till now. However, with the audience choosing content over star power, over the past few years, movies with great content and historical context have benefited a lot. Earlier we saw several period dramas like Lagaan, Jodhaa Akbar, Lootera, amongst others, hit the screens. Though they were visually fantastic and got critical acclaim, they had an average or below par run at the box office. However with Bajirao Mastani, Bhansali was able to break this rut. He made a profitable period film, which was not only visually appealing, but also earned critical acclaim. And with Padmaavat, the filmmaker has given Bollywood the most profitable period drama till date and proved once and for all that this genre can also mint money. Check out our full box office analysis to know more.

Economics

Padmaavat was made on a budget of nearly Rs 200 crore. The makers have recovered nearly Rs 100 crore through theatrical collections (40 per cent of all India nett collections). Add to that the amount collected through the sale of the theatrical rights, the music rights, satellite rights and the digital rights and you will realise that the makers have earned a total of nearly Rs 275 crore. This means the film has made a Rs 75 crore profit already. And with the film set to continue it’s run at the box office, we can expect the film to end up with a profit of Rs 125 crore or more. If we add the overseas figures, this number would go even higher. (ALSO READ – Box office roundup January: Padmaavat and Tiger Zinda Hai give a fantastic start to 2018)

Previous period films, including Bajirao Mastani, have either just made their money or profits less than Rs 100 crore. This points to just one thing – not only is Padmaavat the most profitable period drama, but it has also proved that period dramas can make money at the box office.

What does this mean for future period films?

Padmaavat‘s success has proved that in a day and age when a film riding on just Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan’s name hasn’t been able to make money, a good film with great content and historical background can earn a profit of more than Rs 100 crore. Several filmmakers, who were hesitant to take up historical topics because of the economics, will now happily make those films. Period dramas like Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Kesari, Tanaji – The Unsung Warrior, Thugs of Hindostan and Ramayana will also benefit from Padmaavat‘s success. People will now be even more enthusiastic to see period films and this will help them rake in the moolah! (ALSO READ – Padmaavat has CRUSHED Baahubali 2’s this record in just 19 days)

Padmaavat has CRUSHED Baahubali 2’s this record in just 19 days

Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor's Padmaavat CRUSHES this record of Prabhas' Baahubali 2: The Conclusion - here's how!

Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor‘s Padmaavat has been unstoppable at the box office. Be it the domestic or the international markets, the period drama has been raking in the moolah and breaking records left, right and centre. On day 19, the film achieved another unimaginable feat. Padmaavat cruised past Baahubali 2‘s lifetime box office collection in New Zealand and with that, it became the all time highest grossing Indian movie in the country. As trade analyst and industry tracker – Ramesh Bala revealed on Twitter, “#Padmaavat with US$614,289 overtakes #Baahubali2 ‘s US$588,399 at the #NewZealand Box office to become the All-time No.1 Indian Movie in #NZL.” Quite an achievement, don’t you think?

All this has been possible courtesy the fantastic pre release buzz, the wide release in different formats (2D, 3D, Imax 3D, Tamil and Telugu) and the great response from the audience and the critics. The engaging content with a historical storyline, intense action sequences and amazing cinematography meant that people kept raving about the movie. A tremendous word of mouth publicity grew and it helped the film rake in the moolah. At the worldwide box office, Padmaavat is now nearing the Rs 500 crore mark (gross) and it should touch the Rs 550 crore mark (gross) in its lifetime run. For those of you who don’t know, Padmaavat tells the tale of the Rani of Mewar, Padmavati (Deepika). After getting married to Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid), the beautiful queen was one of the most talked about ladies in India. When the tyrant ruler, Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer) heard about her, he made his way to Mewar and asked Maharawal Ratan Singh to let him meet Padmavati. But with married Rajput women not allowed to come forth a stranger, he was denied his request. But on his way out, he sees the Queen’s reflection in a mirror and instantly falls in love with her. He wages a war to capture her and while he defeats the Rajputs, Padmavati ****s herself by committing Jauhar (self immolation). Anyway, share with us your thoughts about the film’s record breaking box office run in the comments section below!
