World Autism Awareness Day: 8 therapies which prove beneficial in treating Autism

Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, here are enlisted few therapies that are proven beneficial in cases of Autism. ABA or Applied Behaviour Analysis is a highly structured, scientific approach that teaches traits like playing, communicating, grooming in self-care, academic and social living s****s. As per previous researches, it has shown a lot of improvement for autism patients.

This training will basically enhance the foundational s****s of a patient such as attention, compliance, and imitation. In this therapy, teacher formulates a clear description of a problem behavior, identifies antecedents, consequences, and other environmental factors that influence and maintain the behavior, develops hypotheses about what occasions and maintains the behavior, and collects observations to support the hypotheses.

Speech problems of autism patients can vary from one level to another. Some may be completely unable to speak while others would have well-developed vocabularies and can speak at length. Any attempt at therapy must begin with an individual assessment of the child’s language abilities by a trained speech and language pathologist.

The basic aim of RDI is to teach children how to think flexibly and engage in social relationships with other people. This training begins by helping children develop relationships with their parents and other family members. It is very similar to other therapies for ASD in that it focuses on the disorder’s core deficit social s****s and interaction.

CBT helps patients regulate their emotions, develop impulse control, improve their behavior , reducing anxious and depressed feelings and behavior by making changes in thoughts and perceptions of situations through a change in cognition. The key ingredient of CBT, which distinguishes it from regular behavior therapy, is working on this change in cognition or how thinking is processed.

PRT is a naturalistic intervention derived from ABA principles. Instead of individual behaviors, it targets pivotal areas of a child's development, such as motivation, responsivity to multiple cues, self-management, and social initiations; it aims for widespread improvements in areas that are not specifically targeted.
