The festival of Mahashivratri is on March 4, and what better place to partake in the grand celebrations than at Isha Yoga Centre in Tamil Nadu. This year will be the 25th year of Mahashivratri at Isha and is expected to be bigger and better.

For those who can’t make it to the celebration in person, the festivities are brought to you by the broadcast medium. Interestingly, over 50 million people watch it around the world, making it one of the world’s biggest cultural, music and spiritual festivals. Isha’s online channels also contribute to take the festival to its views.

The highlight of this year will be some legendary artists and performers: from Azerbaijan drummers, Amit Trivedi, to Hariharan and Karthik along with Sounds of Isha – Isha’s in house musicians – stellar performances are coming your way. There will also be classical dance performances, folk art and culture and meditation sessions as part of the nightlong festivities planned for the event.

A meal called Annadanam is offered to every devotee who comes for the event. The kitchen at Isha, part automated, part manual is equipped to prepare meals for lakhs of people on any given day making it one of the most efficient kitchens in the country. The Mahashivaratri food menu consists of sundal (boiled horse-gram), tomato rice, and sweet pongal.

Mahashivratri is one of the largest and most sacred festival nights of India. The darkest night of the year celebrates the grace of Lord Shiva, and it’s believed that the planetary positions on this night are such that there is a powerful natural upsurge of energy in the human body. It is enormously beneficial for your physical and spiritual well-being to stay awake in a vertical position throughout the night.

President Ram Nath Kovind will be the chief guest at the festival and will pay tribute to the martyrs of Pulwama by planting saplings at the Isha Yoga Centre.
