Durga Puja 2017: 5 Bengali Foods You Must Have at Durga Pujo Pandals

The Hindu festival Durga puja is celebrated in the month of September or October. It is the biggest festival in West Bengal and is also popular in Assam, Odisha, Tripura, Bihar and Jharkhand. The festival celebrates goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura, the shape-shifting buffalo demon. Durga puja starts on the sixth day of Navratri and ends with Dussehra on the tenth day. Huge pandals and stages are constructed for the festival and people gather to worship and honor goddess Durga during these five days. In West Bengal, Durga puja is not just a religious festival, it is the time of the year when people catch up with their friends and relatives, wear beautiful new dresses, talk non-stop, watch skits and other performances, dance to the beat of dhaak and enjoy good Bengali food. Durga puja is also organized by various organizers in Mumbai to recreate the magic of the festival here. Most of these pandals have food stalls serving mouth-watering Bengali delicacies. Here is a list of foods you must have at the popular Durga Puja pandals. (ALSO READ Look Your Best this Durga Puja by Flaunting this Bengali Look!).

Chops and mutton cutlets

Yes, many puja pandals serve non-vegetarian foods and one of the highlights is the chops. You also get vegetable chops. As for cutlet, you will get vegetable, mutton and fish cutlets at the pandals. So, do not forget to try some fish orly, dimer devil, mangsher chop, mochar chop and chicken cutlet.

Mughlai paratha

Mughlai paratha
Deep fried plain flour envelope filled with spicy keema and egg is heaven. It will be oily, but forget about the cholesterol during Durga puja and enjoy this sinful treat. It is usually served with salad and potato curry.

Mutton or chicken Biryani

Kolkata biryani is different. It is less spicy and will have chunky pieces of potato that give it a unique taste. The aromatic rice with succulent chicken and mutton pieces is a delight. Do try this dish this year.

Kathi rolls

Kathis roll is a popular street food in West Bengal and you will be able to enjoy it in Durga puja pandals. You will get authentic egg, chicken or vegetable kathi rolls. (ALSO READ Here’s the Recipe for Kolkata Style Egg Kathi Roll).
Kosha Mangsho

Kosha Mangsho
Kosha Mangsho is slow cooked mutton and is one Bengali dish you should try at the puja this year. It is served with plump puris. Kosha Mangsho is one of most important dishes prepared during the festival.

Puja is more like feasting but the bhog, which is the food offered to the goddess, is vegetarian. The bhog is prepared without garlic and onion. After offering it to the goddess, the bhog is then mixed with the food for the devotees. All these delicious food items are worth relishing at the beautiful pandals during Durga Puja.
