We miss Priyanka Chopra here! It’s just unsettling to not see her at the movies since almost two years now. So every news about her probable upcoming Hindi movie makes us all excited. However, we weren’t really kicked when we came across a Mumbai Mirror report today that states that Priyanka might star in the sequel of her film, Aitraaz, which also had Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The report further states that producer Subhash Ghai has discussed the film with Priyanka and she “has loved the idea of the sequel and is excited to feature in the second installment”. Sure, the film was a commercial success and Priyanka as the antagonist managed to impress the critics and masses alike. But this is 2004, we are talking about.

In Aitraaz, Akshay plays Raj Malhotra, an executive working in a nine to five job for a mobile phone company. He falls in love with Priya (Kareena Kapoor) and they get married. All is well until Mrs Sonia Roy (Priyanka), who is married to the Chairman of the company, Ranjit Roy (Amrish Puri) is appointed as the Managing Director. Post a “business meeting”, she accuses Raj of **** after he rejects her advances. The case ends up in court and later it is revealed that Sonia is actually Raj’s ex-girlfriend, whom he dumped after she aborted their first child a few years ago. How Raj clears all the charges against him with the help of Priya forms the crux of the story.

You see, Mrs Sonia Roy, a power hungry woman worked back then. Even though she said things like, “Mujhe umeed hai ke jaise tum iss company ko satisfy karte aaye ho, vaise mujhe bhi satisfy karoge… ” The film in itself remains a milestone in Hindi cinema because it successfully delved into a few topics (abortion, a man being an object of ***ual harassment) that until then were not really explored. More than Kareena and Akshay, Aitraaz was Priyanka’s film, there is no denying it. It made her the star she is today. But she has come a very long way since then. Just like she wouldn’t want to do anything like a Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion again, similarly, it would serve her better if she doesn’t revisit Mrs Sonia Roy. Come on, she is not only a global star, but she is a humanitarian too. She has to be careful about the roles she does now. Playing a gold-digging man-eater again, that too in 2018 where the way a woman is portrayed on the screen has become such a sensitive issue, is definitely something that Priyanka wouldn’t want now.

There is no official confirmation, neither from Priyanka nor from Ghai on the sequel of Aitraaz, and we really hope there comes none. Priyanka had revealed that she was advised not to be a part of Aitraaz. Good that she didn’t pay a heed to that then, but now we are advising her against the sequel of Aitraaz, and we hope she agrees.
The first film was directed by director duo, Abbas-Mustan. Their last directorial, Machine was a major dud.
