Default Reality Shows Vs Saas - Bahu Fictions

Time and again, there have been questions raised upon the not so progressive content available on Indian television. But, looks like progressive content is indeed taking a front seat as fiction shows no longer seem to appeal to the viewers.

The TRP reports for the last week saw some major changes with a few additional surprises in the top 10. And, from what all of us must have observed, reality shows have overpowered the fiction space big time.

While saas - bahu dramas have been popular and most prevalent for long enough, looks like the change that Indian Television has been wanting is on its way.
And, from what we gauged, here's how we think it is happening.

GECs are no longer confined to just saas - bahu dramas!

Gone are the days when daily saas - bahusagas were the mainstay on GECs as the leading channels have a perfect mix and blend of show genres to offer. Be it Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs 2017 on Zee TVor Khatron Ke Khiladi: Pain In Spain on Colors, the channels are doing well as far as the reality genre is concerned.

Reality shows often create a buzz more than fiction!
While there is no doubt on the fact that saas - bahu dramas or any other form of fiction space do bring a constant set of viewership to the channel, the reality shows, due to their unique and not so predictable outcome, create a sense of stimulation.

Reality shows work due to the content and not celebrity quotient

A show like Khatron Ke Khiladi might work owing to all the celebrity presence in it, but for a show like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa to work, the audience has to have an eye for good content and great talent. Many times, shows haven't worked well on the TRP charts despite all the glamour (like Bigg Boss or Jhala Dikhlaa Ja) while those with sheer talent, (India's Got Talent, Dance Plus) have fared extremely well.

The lack of innovation and uncertainty

What makes any fiction show a worthy watch is the dubiousness which most of the shows these days lack as it is very easy to gauge what is going to happen next. While saas - bahu dramas definitely do not satisfy this need, it is the finite series and other genres that somehow, do manage to keep the viewers entertained with parts of both ambiguity and lucidity.

We could take a show like Beyhadhfor example, where viewers are not only fascinated but also hooked on to it. At the end of the day, it is nothing but melodrama that the shows back up on.

The viewers prefer shows that are rather brisk

Last but not the least, a show like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah coming in the top 5 with yet another surprise package, Zee TV's Fear Files, proves that viewers do not like things the typical way anymore. Mahakaali: Anth Hi Arambh Hai is yet another show in the top 5 that proves how even a mythological show is totally capable of outdoing Saas - bahudramas. With front runners like Kumkum Bhagya, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Ishqbaaaz, Shakti...Astitva Ke Ehsaah Kii and Yeh Hai Mohabbateintaking a backseat, it is the only proof that we need to up the game as far as fiction drama is concerned.

#TRPToppers: After ages, Star Plus is DETHRONED from the top spot as its rival takes over!

3-4 minutes

It's not every week that we include the positions of channel variations in our headline, but this week deserves a special mention. The constant topper on the channel list, Star Plus has finally been DETHRONED after a long time and the one to take its position is none other than Colors. How did that happen? Take a read -
It's a humongous drop for Zee TV's supernatural episodic show, Fear Files as the show falls to the 10th spot garnering 2.2 points. The hype for the show managed to live up in the initial week but it seems to be falling now and may see an exit next week.

It's yet another consistent week for Dance Plus 3 as the show is the only reality show from Star Plus that has maintained its position in the charts. With 2.3 points, it is good times for the show and it will seemingly continue.

The unwanted consistency stays for Kumkum Bhagya as the show not only maintains its position but also the viewership as it goes on to fetch 2.5 points.

It's a minor drop for the spin-off show, Kundali Bhagya as the show gets the 7th spot this week with 2.6 points and it's a possibility the continuous betterment of other shows will lead to both the Bhagyas staying low.

And Kundali Bhagya's drop was a swap of positions of sorts as Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai took over the 6th position going on to grab 2.6 points and becomes the only fiction show from Star Plus to be on the list this week.

Colors' mythological epic saga, Mahakaali: Anth Hi Aarambh Hai continues to wow one and all as it maintains its position in top 5 with a slight drop in the ratings garnering 2.7 points. It drops to the 5th position as opposed to 3rd spot last week.

If it was a humongous drop for Fear Files this week, it's an equally massive jump for Colors' Shakti... Astitva Ke Ehsaas Kii who has seen the 4th spot after a really long time. With 2.7 points, it seems the show is back in the top game and will only rise further.

Combating all the odds time and again, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah continues to surprise as the show not only rises to the 3rd spot this week but fetches a staggering 2.8 points too.

The 2nd spot continues to be taken over by Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi as the show stays put at its position with a minor drop in the ratings grabbing 3.1 points.

It has become a story like that of Naagin as the topper continues to be Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2017, where the show garners 3.4 points.

While there has been notable but not major difference in the spots of various shows, it is the fact that Star Plus losing the top spot this week caught the eye of one and all. We wonder if Star Plus will be able to bounce back next week.
