 Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi by birth became a Mahatma for India who completely reformed the phase of freedom fight ever since he came here. 2nd October is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to observe and remember Father of the nation on his birthday. Gandhi was a lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who linked himself to the nationalist movement against the British rule of India.  Dandi March was also known as the Salt March and it was a great step in Indian freedom movement that shook British government to roots. The movement was carried protest against the steep tax the British levied on salt. The Satyagraha was an act of nonviolent civil disobedience in colonial India initiated by Gandhi to produce salt from seawater, as it had been practiced by the Indian people until British officials deemed such production illegal and repeatedly used force to stop it.  Also known as Kasturbai, she was married to M K Gandhi. She involved herself with politics in South Africa in 1904 when she helped her husband and others establish the Phoenix Settlement near Durban. Then in 1913, she took part in protests against the ill-treatment of Indian immigrants in South Africa, for which she was arrested. Kasturba and Gandhi then permanently left South Africa in July 1914 and returned to live in India.  Sarojini Naidu was one of the most prominent faces of Indian freedom Struggle. Apart from being a political activist, she was also a prolific writer, orator, administrator and a gifted poet and that’s how she got linked with Gandhi in political terms.  Gandhi introduced charkha to Indians in order to boycott the British textile imports, that were making the mills of Manchester and Lancashire prosper. By developing a cottage industry based on the family spinning wheel, he showed them the way. He requested Indians to bum foreign clothes and make the spinning wheel not only a symbol of simplicity and economic freedom, but also a symbol of peace.  Gandhi and Nehru who defined the national freedom movement, and thus, the moral template of the independent India met on December 26, 1916 for the first time.  Indian national Congress was the single most popular party, spearheading India's war for independence when Gandhi returned, having led two successful revolutions in South Africa. They were conducted on the lines of Satyagraha, Gandhi's personal mode of non-violent resistance. Indian National Congress (INC), at that point was dominated by the combative policies of the extremists. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal were the chief propagators of these extremist tendencies within the ranks of the INC.  Round Table Conference was a series of meetings in three sessions called by the British government to consider the future constitution of India. The conference resulted from a review of the Government of India Act of 1919, undertaken in 1927 by the Simon Commission, whose report was published in 1930. The conference was held in London.  Mahatma Gandhi has spent last 144 days of his life at Birla House now known as Gandhi Smriti.  Indians will mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 125th birth anniversary this year.  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is known as Mahatma meaning ‘Great Soul’. He was an astute political campaigner who fought for Indian independence from British rule and for the rights of the Indian poor.
