Default TOP 10 Bengali soaps stepped out of the conventional saas-bahu track

Saas-bahu drama, kitchen politics and high-octane melodrama have been dominating Indian television for a long time now. While the small screen has been ‘accused’ by critics of airing ‘regressive’ content, makers point fingers at the TRP charts claiming kitchen politics and the sudden reappearance of 'dead protagonists' do affect viewership. And Bengali television isn’t an exception. Well, there are a few shows that deal with different concepts keeping saas-bahu drama aside. Here’s a look... (Photo: Facebook)

Gaaner Oparey

How can we forget Gaaner Oparey, a masterpiece by Rituparno Ghosh! Rabindranath Tagore was the show's heart and soul. The story revolved around Pupe who grew up in a musical environment where Kobiguru is worshipped as god. She meets Gora, a happy-go-lucky guy who loves fusion music.
The show, launched in 2010, still holds a special place in the Bengali audience. From the use of music, especially Rabindra Sangeet, beautiful narrative to the star cast, everything in 'Gaaner Oparey' had a special touch. No wonder, the memories of ‘Gaaner Oparey’ are still fresh in the mind of Bengali television viewers. It introduced many young and fresh talents to the audience including Mimi Chakraborty, Arjun Chakraborty, Gourab Chakraborty, Indrasish Roy, Anindita Bose, and many others who are now big stars. Bodhisattwor Bodhbuddhi

Amar Thikana Tai Briddhashram

The show, which also has a second season, portrayed the life of elderly people, their loneliness, and other issues. Veteran actress Lily Chakravarty played the character Yashoda, who lives in an oldage home with other inmates. Annwesha Hazra, who is now playing the female lead in 'Amader Ei Poth Jodi Na Sesh Hoy', played Roshni’s character in the popular series. Roshni used to take care of the elderly inmates. The focus of the show was to initiate a debate among the viewers about the necessity of oldage homes, as a large number of children in other cities or abroad work. Late director Debidas Bhattacharya directed the show, which enjoyed a huge fan following. (Photo: Facebook)

Indrani

While there are numerous shows based on the story of an older man marrying a 19 or 20-year-old girl, this is the first time a Bengali TV show is narrating the love story of an older woman and a much younger guy. The recently launched show stars Ankitaa Chakraborty in the titular role. According to the story, Indrani works as the chief administrative officer of a hospital. 20-something Dr. Aditya, who also works in the same hospital falls in love with Indrani, who has a young daughter. Actor Rahul Ganguly plays Aditya's role. (Photo: Facebook)

Phirki

Bengali television doesn’t feture such concepts these days. The show caught the attention of the audience with its hard-hitting storyline which featured actress Aarja Banerjee essaying the role of a transgender mom Lakshmi. She adopts a baby girl named, Phirki. Lakshmi proved motherhood doesn’t depend on gender. The show beautifully portrayed Lakshmi’s constant struggle to prove her existence as an individual as well as a mother. Actress Sampriti Poddar played the role of grown-up Phirki. Unfortunately, the story finally took a different turn with Phirki’s married life and eventually wrapped up its journey sooner than expected, but the Bengali audience will remember Phirki for a long time.
