Paryaya Festival: Udupi Gets Ready for the Ceremonial Transfer of Power of Management

The grand biennial Paryaya festival will be held on January 18, 2018, in Udupi, Karnataka. Udupi is decked up with arches hailing the second Paryaya of Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami of Palimar Mutt. The Paryaya festival marks the transfer of power of management and worship of Lord Krishna and this time Vidyadheesha Tirtha will take charge from Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt. The 800-year-old Sri Krishna Mutt or temple sees a ceremonial transfer of power of management from one seer to another. Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt will be completing his record fifth Paryaya this year and will be descending from the Paryaya Peetha. The transfer of power of management from one seer to another seer of the eight mutts or Ashta Mutts of Udupi biennially is eagerly awaited in the temple town.
Palimar Mutt’s Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami will be ascending the Paryaya Peetha which is also called the Sarvajna Peetha for the second time at the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple. No seer of the Ashta Mutt other than Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt has ascended the Paryaya Peetha five times ever since the biennial Paryaya system started in 1522 AD. The Paryaya festival is celebrated with much pomp, fervor and grandeur in the temple town of Udupi.

Cutouts and banners carrying the photographs of Vidyadheesha Tirtha can be seen throughout the small town. The most number of banners and welcome arches can be seen on the Jodu Katte, Taluk Office, Court Road, Diana Circle, and Kavi Muddanna Road.
