Default Bollywood Vs Hollywood

After Black Panther steamrolled over Aiyaary at the box office, here's why Bollywood should stop taking on superhero films!

Over the past few years, Hollywood has been slowly eating into the Bollywood pie. The English films, with a better production value, are attracting and impressing the audience more than our Hindi films are able to do! A paradigm shift has taken place with several Hollywood franchises becoming popular in India, so much so that they have even hit the Rs 100 crore mark in the country. The English films, especially superhero movies, have gained a massive fan following and hence, they have taken over the box office and outperformed the Hindi releases on several occasions. The latest example being Marvel’s Black Panther, which steamrolled over Sidharth Malhotra’s Aiyaary.

For the uninitiated, Black Panther has managed to rake in Rs 19.35 crore from 1000 screens over the first weekend, while Aiyaary could only manage to collect Rs 11.70 crore from 1750 screens. Quite clearly, the Bollywood release was outperformed by the superhero movie. But this is not the first time a superhero film has managed to do so. We can give you several examples right here!

Deadpool v/s Fitoor

The comic superhero franchise of Deadpool came to the Indian market and surprised one and all when it outperformed Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s Fitoor over the Valentine’s weekend in 2016. Obviously, the flawed screenplay of Fitoor was one of the major reasons for this, but Deadpool was also very entertaining!

Batman V Superman v/s Rocky Handsome

With two of the biggest and most popular superheroes in India, Batman and Superman coming together for a film, it was obviously going to crush its competition right? And that’s what it did. Even though Rocky Handsome was a decent movie, Batman V Superman ****ed it at the box office. (ALSO READ – Black Panther THRASHES Aiyaary at the box office on day 2)

Captain America: Civil War v/s 1920 London
Two major franchises of Hollywood and Bollywood clashed in 2016 with Captain America: Civil War and 1920 London battling it out at the box office. CapAm, being the popular superhero franchise in India, with so many superheroes being a part of this movie and of course, a fantastic screenplay, it had to outclass 1920 London, which was really sub par!

Logan v/s Commando 2
Being the last part of the Wolverine standalone series meant that Logan had generated a lot of buzz in India. And even though it clashed with a popular franchise film like Commando 2, it emerged as the winner quite easily.

Wonder Woman v/s Dobaara: See Your Evil
Wonder Woman was the first standalone film of the new superhero franchise and hence the buzz and the fantastic storyline helped it beat Huma Qureshi’s Dobaara: See Your Evil quite easily.

Thor: Ragnarok v/s Ittefaq
Both Thor: Ragnarok and Ittefaq had generated a lot of intrigue in the Indian audience, however, being the third part of a franchise like Thor and with such an amazing screenplay, Thor: Ragnarok crushed Ittefaq at the BO. Justice League v/s Aksar 2 and Tumhari Sulu
Justice League clashed with two Bollywood films, Aksar 2 and Tumhari Sulu last year and it easily outclassed both, courtesy the strong content.

Black Panther v/s Aiyaary
As we told you earlier itself, Black Panther has completely mauled Aiyaary over the first weekend. Marvel’s first black standalone superhero film was much better than Aiyaary in terms of content and screenplay! (ALSO
But what gives Hollywood an edge over Bollywood?
Over the past few years, the Indian audience has become choosy and wiser. Now people don’t run to watch a movie just because of a superstar. The audience wants to see some good content and if you present a decent film, people will surely watch it. The Hollywood releases, especially the superhero films, have always been packaged well and have an intriguing storyline. Hence, it has built a trust in the Indian audience that if they watch an English film, it will surely be worth their money. The production value of a small Hollywood superhero film is also considerably more than any big Hindi film. This helps the visuals, the packaging and the final product to be much better. In fact, most of the times, Bollywood films are even rushed to meet the release date, while Hollywood makers don’t mind pushing their dates. They never compromise on quality and that sets them apart from the rest.

Apart from all these things, several Hollywood superhero franchises like Marvel and DC have developed a genuine fan following. People wait for months and years for these superhero films to release. So obviously, these movies will have a larger buzz and surely they will outperform the Hindi movies, right?

Verdict
With Black Panther beating Aiyaary by such a huge margin and with a track record of Superhero films beating Bollywood films over the past few years, we guess Bollywood should stop taking on Superhero films. What’s your take? Share with us
