10 Easy Steps to File Income Tax Return Online for 2018



If you have not filed your income tax return (ITR) for 2016-2017 yet, and have been wondering how to do it then don’t delay further. You can do it online sitting from the comforts of your home in just 10 simple steps. It is all the more important as according to new income tax rules the time period for filing belated or revised income tax return has changed from two years to one financial year. Accordingly, return for 2015-2016 and 2016-17 can be filed or revised till March 31, 2018, only. Here is a 10-step guideline.
Step 1: Go to the website https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home. If you are new to e-filing , then first register yourself on the website.

Step 2: If you are a registered user type your login in details and get started.

Step 3: Once you log-in, go to the section called “e-file” and click on Income Tax return

Step 4: A window will open asking for your PAN number, Assessment Year (AY 2017-2018) and the type of ITR . For salaried class ITR 1 is applicable. If you have already linked your Aadhaar with PAN , click and select it for e-verification. Otherwise, go for other options, such as sending ITR V through speed post

Step 5: Read the instructions

Step 6: The page will open to fill your personal details, most of these details must be already filled as it gets synchronised with details on your PAN and Aadhaar card.

Step 7: Fill in your income details-
  • Income from salary— It is given under the section B of Form 16 as “Gross Total Income
  • Income from house property- If you have rental income fill it. If you have taken loan then fill the amount in negative
  • Income from other sources- For income from any other source
Also fill in deductions to be availed under Section 80C and 80D

Step 8: The window shows how much tax has been deducted at source as TDS. Also, at the end of the page fill in your bank details

Step 9: It will show how much tax liability you have, and do you need to pay more taxes

Step 10: The last page asks if you have made any donations under section 80G. After filling in the required details, click on “Submit” to send your ITR.

After submitting don’t forget to e-verify your ITR or send a copy of ITR V to the income tax department through a registered post.
