Default Acting is not my Cup of Tea - Ashi Singh

It’s great to be doing what I enjoy the most

Ashi Singh, who has been a part of shows like Gumrah, Crime Patrol and Savdhaan India, became a household name with her show Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai. The actor, who was last seen in the fantasy show Aladdin - Naam Toh Suna Hoga and had replaced Avneet Kaur, is gearing up for her upcoming show Meet. Ashi says, “It’s great to be back to what I enjoy doing the most and I am happy to play a character which I haven’t done in the past.

I’m my biggest competition

With many young and aspiring actors putting their best foot forward to stay relevant in the race to stardom, often a few of them digress from their goals. However, for Ashi, staying relevant is all about competing with herself. “I’m someone who believes in competing with myself, rather than competing with others.

I can’t compare my journey with everyone else

Each actor, who is a part of this industry, has his/her own share of struggles and success. If I start comparing my journey to everyone else or actors close to my age, it will be unfair to me. I strive to become a better performer every day so that no matter whoever I work with, I’m always remembered for my work.

I have faced gender bias and have learned how to handle it

Gender stereotypes and biases are something that are quite commonly seen and experienced in our society. While her new show revolves around this issue, when asked if she ever faced any kind of gender discrimination, she says, “I have faced it often. Often it has happened that back home, whenever I am talking to someone and if my dad and brother are with me, the other person would talk to them instead of answering me. Initially, it would hurt me but now I have learned not to take it lying down. Luckily, I never faced any issues in my professional space.

Over the years, I have become more flexible with my choice of projects

When asked about her way of choosing a project and the changes in the same over the years, she says, “Although the criteria hasn’t changed much, I have become less rigid. I have become more flexible in terms of what kind of work I want to do or not. During my initial days, I wasn’t very keen on doing fantasy shows until I did Aladdin - Naam Toh Suna Hoga. Once I did the show, I realised that I should not be too judgemental.”

Whenever I decided to quit I would get interesting projects and would stay back

With no filmy connections, there were times when the thought of quitting showbiz did cross her mind. She says, “There were so many occasions when I thought of quitting and not wasting my time on things that weren’t fetching me any results. I decided to rather focus on my studies and look for another career option. In 2017, when I was preparing for my graduation, I gave the audition for my first show. I wasn’t expecting at all to get selected. However, to my surprise, I got selected and since then there has been no looking back.”

We all have to work and follow safety guidelines

With so much uncertainty regarding the current scenario, Ashi feels that working keeps her happy and sane. She says, “I’m a workaholic even though the situation is a bit scary right now. For how long can we sit at home? We have to work and follow all safety guidelines. Also, acting is my first love and my job keeps me mentally happy and focused.”
