Kisna Kisna released in 2005, starring Vivek Oberoi who played the title role, Antonia Bernath and Isha Shravani. This Subhash Ghai musical was set in the 1940’s when India was struggling for independence. The love story had music by A.R.Rahman and Ismail Darbar. The film, however, did not perform well at the box office.

Aan This 1952 box-office hit movie had veteran actor Dilip Kumar, Nimmi, Nadira. This 1952 hit was made by the famous director Meh**** Khan. Dilip Kumar belongs to a Rajput clan loyal to the kind and just king. The movie had all the usual ingredients of an epic – grand costumes, melodrama and music, spectacle, color and exuberance. It did not have a huge budget or expensive sets but had a great story that impressed the audiences and resulted in a hit.

Amrapali This 1966 movie starring Sunil Dutt and Vyjayanthimala was a story of Samrat Ajaatshatru of Magadh. The dancing magnum opus ‘Amrapali’ was a flop. Though it was shot on a decent budget, it didn’t do well at the box-office.

Anarkali This movie released before Mughal-e-Azam, but was on the lines of Mughal-e-Azam. It was a mythical and legendary love story of Prince Salim (Pradeep Kumar), the son of Akbar with the court dancer Anarkali (Bina Rai).The film also had Noorjahan. It was the top grossing Hindi film in the year of its release, and one of the biggest Hindi film hits of the decade. Its songs - Zindagi Pyar Ki Do Char Ghadi, Yeh Zindagi Usi Ki Hai - I Zamana Yeh Samjha – were also chart toppers!

Humayun The film is about Mughal emperor Humayun (Ashok Kumar). The film stresses the friendship between the victorious Babar (Nawaz) and the defeated Rajputs. Hamida Bano (Nargis) is a commoner with whom Humayun falls in love. The major highlights of the film are its elaborate Mughal sets and the spectacular battle scenes with elephants and horses. Only replicating things from the past does not guarantee success. It’s the script that makes such ambitious movies classic pieces of art!
