Vitamin D is essential. A vital vitamin for fibro patients, Vitamin D can be found in abundance in sunlight. Experts suggest that correcting any deficiency in Vitamin D can help in relieving the symptoms of fibromyalgia. All patients should be screened for the deficiency of Vitamin D. Lack of Vitamin D in the body can lead to bone and muscle pain, thus leading to an increase in the joint pain. Especially in the winters, it is a must for patients of fibromyalgia to up their intake of vitamin D.

Stay away from additives as much as you can. Food additives, which are commonly found in sugary and junk food, can act as an excitotoxin molecule, which unleashes your sensitivity to pain. Staying away from these additives can help in reducing fibromyalgia symptoms. Research has shown that eating trans fats can contribute to musculoskeletal pain and aggravate fibromyalgia and should be avoided as much as possible. Scientifically speaking, artificial sweeteners on the other hand can contribute to severe joint and body pain, cognitive dysfunction, dizziness and headaches and should be avoided.

Lean protein should be enjoyed. Reduction in the amount of your carb intake and packing more protein in your diet can help in keeping blood glucose levels from fluctuating, which can trigger fibromyalgia. Also, replacing red meat with lean proteins can be beneficial for you if you have fibromyalgia. According to the National Fibromyalgia Association, eliminating red meat can help alleviate symptoms. Replace red meat with lean proteins such as poultry, beans, soy products and fish. Fish contain omega-3 fatty acids that, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, can help reduce inflammation and support your immune system. [Via]

Simple carbs should be avoided. Food items, such as sugar, white flour and caffeine can lead to a temporary surge of energy followed by a crash. Fibromyalgia patients generally tend to experience hypersensitivity and thus should stay away from experiencing a sudden hike and low in their blood sugar levels. It is generally seen that people with fibromyalgia can suffer from hypoglycemia, a condition of extreme low blood sugar level in the body. This means that after consuming simple carbs your body might have a craving for sugary and starchy foods, or you might suffer from depression, fatigue, headaches and mood swings and should be completely avoided.

Fish should be your preferred choice. Full of Omega-3 fatty acids, fish - especially salmon - are natural health wonders, which help in keeping heart diseases at bay. According to medical experts, fishes such as salmon, sardines and herring help in raising good cholesterol levels by 4% and are also known to reduce inflammation. Plant sources of omega-3s include soybeans, canola, flaxseeds, walnuts, and their oils. Fishes full of omega 3 fatty acids also help in dealing with morning stiffness and painful tender joints.

Keep a tab on your caffeine intake. It is generally seen that fibromyalgia patients suffer from sleeplessness, thus coffee is an easy temptation. This can lead to a circular problem, thus meaning lack of sleep at night. Caffeine generally tends to set you up for a crash and can disrupt your sleep schedules. Go for a healthier alternative if you use caffeine to help you sleep, such as decaffeinated herbal teas.
