The Duster has been Renault’s most anticipated car for India. Now that it’s finally here, the Duster has been worth the wait. It has all the right makings for a perfect package; it’s a compact SUV that can seat five in reasonable comfort, the looks are intimidating albeit a little dull, the petrol and diesel engines deliver well on both performance as well as economy and with such attractive introductory prices, the Duster is hard to resist.

India loves SUVs and whenever there is an offering under 15 lakh rupees, the whole country jumps up with joy. It happened with the Safari, the Scorpio, the XUV500 and believe it or not - even with the Force One! However, there is a big chunk of people in this country and in this SUV loving segment, for whom practicality and functionality supersedes technical specs and a big-body form. For such people, there is a new breed of cars that are preparing their entry into India, and they are called compact crossovers. And the one that has managed to draw first blood in this regard is a Romanian soldier dressed in a French Uniform!




Meet the Duster, a new compact crossover that is built by Renault’s sub-brand Dacia - the same carmaker who built the Logan. And like the Logan, the Duster too is a wide body vehicle. This fact is visible the moment you compare the width to the height of the Duster. Underscoring this design are the long, horizontal slats on the grille and an even longer airdam. What highlight the SUV character are the large, angular headlights, the aluminum finish skid-plate and the hefty, black cladding that you see below the front bumper.



The Duster is built to look like a hiking shoe and you’ll know what I mean when you look at the side profile. The wheel arches for example have a rectangular shape like the chunks you see on the sole of an all-terrain shoe. The tiny glass house and the muscular body further explains the design inspiration. At 1625mm high, the Duster is barely 100mm taller than the Renault Pulse. However, the 205/65 section rubber and the side steps add flair to the design and contribute to making the crossover look brawny.



The tail is no different. The muscular bits continue on the tailgate with angular cuts extending out from the vertical taillights. These fill the boot lid pretty well along with the chrome garnish, the embossed Duster monogram and the large windshield that takes prominence when you glance at the tailgate. Unlike the European model, the top end Duster in India gets parking sensors too. You get the black cladding on the rear bumpers as well, to complete the SUV look.



Going forward, Renault is also expected of offer a range of accessories like bull bars, bigger side steps and some chrome-plated body parts – since this is the kind of aftermarket stuff that Indian SUV buyers fancy.

Overall, the Duster is a simplistic design that manages to turn heads. It does have its own share of muscle and chrome but it shows it all off without shouting out loud – and that is one of the primary reasons why this compact crossover’s design will age well no matter how many years you decide to own it.
