Default Hike reports 33% surge in daily time spent on its platform

Amidst the lockdown, online messaging platforms and video-conferencing apps have seen a massive surge in recent days. Similar to WhatsApp, now India-based Hike Messenger shared that in March alone, there has been an increase of 33 percent in daily time spent on its platform. It noted that users spent an average of over 44 minutes per day inside the app.

“As more and more people are hanging out online rather than offline, Hike which has always been a platform for users to connect with their close friends & loved ones, is witnessing a surge in both average daily time spent in the app and user engagement,” noted Hike in a press statement on Tuesday.

As per a recent study, WhatsApp experienced a 40 percent increase in usage. This information had come from a study conducted by Kantar, a data and consulting company. Popular social media apps like Facebook and Instagram also experienced more than 40 percent increase in usage.

The report stated that the spike across all messaging platforms has been biggest in the 18-34 age group. Across all stages of the pandemic, WhatsApp has experienced the greatest gains in usage, as far as messaging platforms are concerned. In Spain, the usage of this messaging app increased by 76 percent, which is huge. Countries like China witnessed a 58 percent spike in usage of local social media apps, including Wechat and Weibo.

Last week, Microsoft’s Skype video calling app reported a surge of 70 percent within a month. The service is now being used by about 40 million people globally. It noted that Skype-to-Skype calls were bumped up in number by 220 percent compared to just a month ago. The stocks of various similar video-conferencing companies saw a rise after many countries including India went into lockdown. Also seeing a rise in stocks were gaming companies, serving as entertainment to millions of people confined to their homes.
