Sony acquires TV rights of Yamla Pagla Deewana for Rs 180 mn

The race for acquiring new movies is showing no signs of slowing down. In a keenly fought contest, Multi Screen Media has acquired the exclusive satellite telecast rights for Yamla Pagla Deewana.

Sources say MSM (formerly known as Sony Entertainment Television) has paid Rs 180 million, indicating that prices broadcasters are paying for movies to telecast on their networks are still ruling high.
Produced by Nitin Manmohan and Sameer Karnik (also the director), the movie was released on 14 January. The film has Dharmendra and his two sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, as star casts.

Max senior EVP and business head Sneha Rajani confirmed the development but declined to comment on the acquisition price.
“We have acquired this movie because we believe it will do well and audiences will like it,” she said.
The movie collected Rs 225 million at the domestic box office in the opening weekend.

Mumbai Smoothie

Director:
Kiran Rao
Starring: Aamir Khan, Prateik, Monica Dogra
Rating:

Some movies knock you out with a punch, others gently lay you down, soothe your fevered brow and lull you into a dream. Movies about Mumbai tend to do the former. But Kiran Rao's deeply personal Dhobi Ghat takes you by the hand, leads you to its doorstep and then leaves you to gawk, with pleasure. At Shai Edulji's (Monica Dogra) unknowingly selfish world, where her little indulgence can be someone else's life-altering experience. At Arun's (Aamir Khan) self-absorbed existence, divided between his art and his brooding. At Yasmin's (Kriti Malhotra) video letters to her brother in Malihabad, full of yearning but edged with sadness.
And of Munna's (Prateik) silent ambition, evident in the glistening worked-upon body he admires in a mirror dotted with Salman Khan cut outs. We know enough from Alejandro Inarritu's works that these separate characters will eventually have overlapping lives, but when they do, it is not with a bang but with the steady shimmer of Mumbai's ever-present rain. Rao's actors are fresh, even Khan, who shocks us mildly by using words like f*** and a******. It's an acutely observed and unhurried film. Munna bathing by the side of the railway tracks under cover of darkness, the colours on Arun's canvas melting into the meat frying in the stalls of Mohammad Ali road, begum Akhtar's voice filling the void of a flat, the domestic's daughter proudly reciting tennyson's brook. Arun's drawing the one he's falling in love with, Shai's photographing the one she's becoming obsessed with. One woman's art is another man's reason for living.
Rao's film is like fresh air, as elusive in Mumbai's leaky chawls as in its smoky drawing rooms.
Inhale. Especially because it talks about the cruelty of Mumbai without raging and ranting against it. There is this calm acceptance that this is what life is. People who are divided from each other by caste, class and education cannot always romantically meet by its sea and expect to see differences dissolve. There will always be one who has come to Mumbai to fill his empty stomach (yahan bahut khaya, thapad bhi and khana bhi) and there will always be one who has come here to search for her soul. There will always be one who wants to do things differently and there will always be another who will not want to do anything fresh. And yes, there will always be one who will be wearing a Doors T-shirt because he knows Jim Morrison is so cool and another who has no clue who he is.

Some directors use sledgehammers to make their point. Others use a scalpel. Well, welcome the scalpel.

Welcome also a unique voice for Mumbai. Its Jaunpuri drivers and NRI wanderers. Its artistic souls and its wannabe actors. Its sometime drug dealers and its eternal slumlords.

Default Peepli Live ends the Oscar race

Peepli Live, India's official entry to the Oscars for Best Foreign Film, has been left out of the nine films shortlisted by the Academy. The list will be further scanned before the five final nominees would be announced on 25 January. It may be recalled that Peepli Live had edged out other critically acclaimed films from India like Udaan and Raajneeti to claim the top spot.

Now the films that are still in the Oscar race are Mexican film Biutiful, Algeria's Hors la Loi, Canada's Incendies, Denmark's In a Better World, Greece's Dogtooth, Japan's Confessions, South Africa's Life, above All, Spain's Tambien la Lluvia and Sweden's Simple Simon.

Previous Indian nominations for Best Foreign Film have been few and far between. Mother India became the first Indian film to make the cut in 1958. Three decades later, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! became the second film to make it to the final five in 1988. Another 14 years later in 2002, we saw the third Indian film Lagaan being sent to the Oscars. The golden man eluded all three films, as it did Ashvin Kumar's Little Terrorist, nominated for Best Live Action Short Film in 2004. And now Peeepli Live. Though Indian films may have not won an Oscar, the country’s film personalities have had better luck with individual Oscars.

In 1982, Bhanu Athaiya won Best Costume Design for Gandhi. A decade later, Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was given the Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1992. And 2009's Slumdog Millionaire sweep included an Oscar for sound mixing for Resul Pookutty and two Oscars (Best Score and Best Song) for music maestro A R Rahman.

It's wish come true for Hrithik Roshan as he finally gets to work with Shah Rukh Khan after a waiting period of ten years.

The actor is known to share a great rapport with King Khan from the time they shot for the mega blockbuster, Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham. Ever since then, Hrithik has shown eagerness in working with SRK again but as many projects came and went, nothing really caught their eye or was ever finalized.

It was like a miracle when director Farhan Akhtar's Don 2 -The Chase Continues came along for the duo, in which SRK has already starting shooting for. Without wasting any time, Hrithik grabbed the opportunity and finally ended his wait.

As both actors have now begun the shooting for the movie, Jr. Roshan is seen finding it very hard to control his excitement. And why not? The actor's years' long patience has finally paid off. Let's just hope the pair manage to create magic yet again in this long awaited, upcoming venture of theirs.

Here's a public cheer on seeing our two favorite actors on screen together again!

Bebo who is feeling rather large-hearted these days, recently decided to give ...

Riding high on her year long success beginning with 3 Idiots, ending with Golmaal 3 and with upcoming films featuring three Khans of the industry: Saif, SRK and Salman, the ventures has seemed to put Kareena Kapoor in a generous mood. It makes us wonder if three is the lady's lucky number!

Bebo who is feeling rather large-hearted these days, recently decided to give away iPads and iPhones to everyone in her team, from her hairstylist and make-up man to the designer's assistant. And since the actress is always busy on the sets, along with the iPads and iPhones gizmos, Kareena has also gifted her entire staff walkie-talkies to keep in touch with them during her hectic shooting schedules.

The techno gifts were bought on her recent Christmas vacation in Switzerland with beau Saif Ali Khan.

We hope Kareena keeps this spirit of giving intact throughout the year!

Singapore kicked off the new year as it played host to the much anticipated Zee Cine ...

Hrithik & Suzanne Roshan
Hrithik looks quite dashing in the universal black suit and white shirt. Suzanne, however, disappoints in a dress that means well but with that stitch running down the middle, distracts from the overall look. Bollycurry rating - 4/5
