Significance And Celebrations of Basant Panchami


Basant Panchami or Vasant Panchami, the popular Hindu festival is around the corner and is celebrated across the world with great zeal and fervor. This year the festival falls on January 22 and is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami. The festival marks the arrival of spring and harvest after the winters. Basant Panchami is also dedicated to Goddess Saraswati as it marks the birthday of the Goddess and many perform Saraswati puja on this day. As per Hindu Mythology, Lord Ram ate half tasted g****s of Mata Shabari on Basant Panchami and to commemorate the same this festival is celebrated and this day is also considered as the beginning of life and happiness as the season of spring is a season of rebirth. As per legends, Lord Brahma created the universe on Basant Panchami.Basant Panchami also signifies that the days of ignorance are over and period of joy and awakening has begun.

On this pious occasion, the Goddess Saraswati who is also known as Goddess of knowledge, art and music is worshipped by artists, students and kids for Her blessings. This day falls on the fifth day of Hindu month of Magh which is also the first day of spring season. The word ‘Basant’ means spring and ‘Panchami’ indicates the fifth day on which the auspicious festival falls. The yellow color is given importance on this day as the color represents spiritual knowledge, light and prosperity among others. On this day devotees dress up in yellow outfits and perform rituals. Many educational institutes and colleges organize cultural events to celebrate the occasion

As per some traditions, snakes are fed with milk to bring wealth and prosperity. On this day children are taught their first words as well and also present books on the altar, at Her feet. This ritual is also known as Akshar Abhyasam or Vidyaarambham. Also on this pious day, people also worship Kamdev, the God of Love. Also, people offer their prayers to the Sun God as well. Feasting is also another intrinsic part of the festival. From Boondi laddu to Kheer to Kesari Bhat, a lot of foodstuffs are relished. Kite flying activities are also conducted in some parts of India.
