CWG 2018: All You Need to Know About Sanjita Chanu Who Clinched Second Gold Medal For India



New Delhi, April 6: Indian weightlifter Sanjita Chanu won gold in the women’s 53 kg category at the 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) on Friday. The Manipuri lifter lifted a total of 192 kg which included a CWG record of 84 kg in the snatch and 108 kg in clean and jerk.


This was India’s second gold medal in the ongoing games. The other gold was won by Mirabai Chanu- a woman athlete who also hailed from Manipur. Mirabai Chanu had won a gold in the 48 kg category on Thursday.


Here’s some key facts about Sanjita Chanu:
Born on January 2nd, 1994 Sanjita Chanu hails from Manipur.
She took up the sport of weightlifting in 2006 in Manipur after being inspired by the iconic N Kunjarani Devi.


She grabbed headlines after winning gold at the 2009 senior nationals before grabbing a bronze at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2011.
Chanu won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2012.
She won gold over Mirabai Chanu with a total lift of 173 kg at the 2014 CWG when she just 20 years old.


At the ongoing 2018 CWG, Sanjita booked a spot after taking gold in the women’s 53kg with a total lift of 195kg (85kg+110kg) at the Commonwealth Senior (men and women) Weightlifting Championships.
Notably, India’s medal tally has reached 3 as the weightlifter Gururaja won a silver in the 56 kg category on Thursday.
