Hollywood never shy away from shooting in locations where the scene demands it to. The sense of realism and authenticity is crucial to the execution of the film. Besides being more convincing, it does justice to the story. Most of the times, the very backdrop of their stories is our country. And there have been numerous occasions when Hollywood came India for the concerned and said reasons. This list is a compilation of 10 such films that were shot in India. And here goes the list.

10. Million Dollar Arm


Location: Mumbai

It is a biographical sports drama film based on the true story of baseball pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel who were discovered after winning a reality show competition. The majority of shooting took place in Mumbai. The music of the film was composed by the music meister A R Rahman.

9. Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol


Location: Mumbai & Bengaluru

Yes, you read that right. The 4th installment of the widely popular film franchise was shot in India including the quintessential climax. Anil Kapoor plays an Indian business tycoon in the film. The film was shot near the lanes of Bora Bazaar in Mumbai and Sun TV office in Bengaluru.

8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel


Location: Jaipur and Udaipur

This Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel starrer film’s backdrop lies essentially in India. The film is based on British(Anglo community) retirees who come to India for vacation and make their stay at the best hotel, i.e, The Exotic Marigold Hotel. The scenery of the locations illustrated in the film are breathtaking.

7. The Bourne Supremacy


Location: Goa

Right after the events of the first installment, Jason Bourne lands in the Indian beach state of Goa. More than 20 minutes of screen time was shot here, including an exhilarating chase sequence on the roads of Goa.

6. The Dark Knight Rises


Location: Jodhpur

You mustn’t have anticipated this film on this list. The conclusion of Dark Knight trilogy by Christopher Nolan was shot in India. Remember that Bane’s pit where he was holding Batman as his captive. And later, the dark Knight literally rose out of that pit. That was Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. The cast and crew even stayed for a month in
Jodhpur to shoot the scenes.

5. Lion


Location: Kolkata

Lion is an acclaimed biographical film which released in 2016 and was nominated for six Oscars. The film was majorly shot near Kolkata including the climax scene.It is based on the nonfiction book, A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley with Larry ****rose.

4. Eat Pray Love


Location: Delhi & Haryana

This Julia Roberts film is about exploring oneself. And when Julia’s characters in the film finds herself lost, she embarks on a journey to different countries for self discovery. For spirituality and prayer, she visits India and winds up in an ashram. The scenes were shot in Delhi and Pataudi in Haryana. Also, during the shooting of the film, Julia Roberts was drawn to Hinduism and she is an ardent follower of Neem Karoli Baba and firm believer in the practices of Hinduism.

3. Zero Dark Thirty


Location: Chandigarh

This film is based on how American forces hunted and ****ed Osama Bin Laden at his hideout in Abottabad, Pakistan. Apparently, when the makers of the film didn’t get permission to shoot there, they opted to shoot in an Indian city and make it look like Abottabad. That city was Chandigarh.

2. Life of Pi


Location: Puducherry and Kerala

First of all, and I couldn’t emphasize enough, no other film has depicted India so beautifully than did Life of Pi. Every second of the film is a visual treat. The film is about Pi Patel who survives a shipwreck and shares a lifeboat with a tiger. Irfaan Khan, Tabu and Suraj Sharma star in the film. The locations where the film was shot are Puducherry and Kerala. The film was acclaimed worldwide and also was a huge box office success. It was directed by Oscar winner Ang Lee.

1. Slumdog Millionaire


Location: Mumbai

The film is about how a teenager who lived his life in slums became a millionaire on the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. The film was shot extensively in the slums of Mumbai and around railway tracks. This film needs no introduction. Based in Q&A by Vikas Swarup, directed by Danny Boyle, the film is an international phenomenon. It won 8 academy awards including the best picture.
