The one guest who DIDN'T want to be there: Runaway horse throws its soldier and makes a swift exit

It wouldn’t be a proper wedding if there wasn’t at least one slip-up.
But pity the poor cavalry guardsman who fell from his horse when it spooked at the cheering crowds.
He desperately tried to cling on, but was thrown onto the tarmac as the carriage procession left Westminster Abbey and turned from Parliament Square onto Whitehall.
At first he managed to grab onto the reins and keep his steed to one side, as Kate and William passed by in their open-top 1902 State Landau.
Kate, who is allergic to horses, looked shocked and a little worried, but William calmly reassured her.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...35_634x409.jpg Homing sense: The riderless creature careers alongside the procession - but eventually found its way home to the stables at Horse Guards' Barracks

It was at this point that the horse broke free of its rider’s grip and bolted up the road.
It overtook the newly-weds’ carriage and a mounted police officer tried to grab its reins.
The rest of the Household Cavalry, comprised of the Life Guards and Prince Harry’s Blues and Royals, looked on as their horses dodged the runaway.
As it careered up the road, police officers stationed at the crowd barriers yelled at the spectators to protect their faces with their arms in case it charged into the crowd.

Fortunately for the frightened animal, and the thousands lining the streets, it made straight for home – the stables of the Horse Guards’ Barracks further up Whitehall
Claire Davis, 37, watched the commotion with her husband Horace, 40, and their children Alannah, 13 and Marcus, five.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...03_634x432.jpg Just married: Kate looked alarmed when she saw the horse break loose but was reassured by her new husband

Mrs Davis, from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, said: ‘The horses seemed to be quite upset and distressed with the cheering of the crowd and one of the horse’s heads went up and he jolted the rider off.
‘Another soldier grabbed the horse by the reins and was telling the guy who had fallen off to come to the side and remount.
‘But it was difficult for him to regain control, without someone on its back.
‘He was trying to herd it down the side of the barrier but it was hard as the horse was so strong.
‘People were worried about it charging into the crowd, and the rider stopped it doing that at a crucial moment which really prevented a disaster.
Another onlooker Kelly Littlewood, 24, from Gee Cross in Greater Manchester, said: ‘Kate pulled a funny face and looked quite worried when it happened.
‘The horse raced up the road right in front of Kate and William’s carriage, but you could see William calming Kate down.
‘It was very fortunate that no-one was injured – that would have been dreadful.’

SSSHH...! The sound of London celebrating the Royal Wedding gets a bit too much for one bridesmaid

Being invited to the wedding of the decade would make most people beside themselves with excitement, but for the youngsters chosen to accompany Kate Middleton down the aisle it was a dream come true.
As the world watched, the six children who made up the bride's troupe of bridesmaids and pageboys were the epitome of good behaviour and composure - for the most part at least.
The noise of millions clapping and cheering outside Buckingham Palace got too much for the new Duke of Cambridge's three-year-old goddaughter Grace Van Cutsem who covered her ears to escape the racket when she joined the happy couple on the balcony.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...17_634x398.jpg Pipe down: Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge kiss on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, but it's all too much for bridemaid Grace van Cutsem, left, who has to cover her ears from all the cheering
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...99_306x423.jpg Ssshhh: Bridesmaid Grace van Cutsem covers her ears during the fly past watched by millions

And her displeasure at the noise was all too apparent from the look on her face. Even as Kate bent down to comfort her as the flypast approached, she repeated the gesture.
However, during the service all assumed the look of solemnity befitting the event and appeared to be concentrating hard on their jobs.

While none of them flinched at the attention, three-year-old Eliza Lopes, the Duchess of Cornwall's granddaughter, clutched her floral head-dress constantly, apparently concerned it might slip off.
The others, William's seven-year-old cousin Lady Louise Windsor and his second cousin Margarita Armstrong-Jones, eight, Billy Lowther-Pinkerton, 10, the son of William's private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, and the prince's godson, Tom Pettifer, eight, also appeared stern as they played the role they had rehearsed only yesterday at Westminster Abbey.
Despite their young ages, all six children seemed to appreciate the importance of the ceremony, frowning seriously as they stopped behind the bride when she reached the altar.

Only once the ceremony was over and they were on their way out of the church did the infants appear to relax a little - realising, perhaps, that they had performed their duties with aplomb.
The elder children even allowed themselves to smile a little as they left the abbey - although Eliza still fiddled with her head-dress.

As the newlyweds climbed into their waiting carriage, Tom broke into a broad grin, gazing about in joyous wonder at the scene.
And when the happy couple entered Buckingham Palace with the children behind them, the little boy, still smiling, could hardly take his eyes off them.
Only once they took to the balcony of the palace, where Prince William kissed his bride, did one or two of the infants become overwhelmed.
For the most part though they won the hearts of the adoring public as they waved and smiled.

Speaking near the abbey, April Brown, 45, from Chievely in Berkshire, said: 'They all looked so cute. I noticed that with one of the tiny bridesmaids, her mum brought her forward to join the procession.'
Lesley Hill, 44, from St Helen's, said: 'I thought the page boys and flower girls were very cute and their outfits were beautiful.

The children looked 'so beautiful', Doris Narty, 74, from Ghana, gushed. 'Their quality was superb. Everything was perfection.'
Indeed the bridesmaids' hand-made dresses were the stuff of every little girl's dreams.
Ivory with ballerina-length pleated skirts, puff sleeves and gold sashes tied in a bow, they were created by bespoke childrenswear designer Nicki Macfarlane, whose daughter Charlotte Macfarlane helped make them at their homes in Wiltshire and Kent.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...74_634x391.jpg Hello up there: Pageboy Tom Petiffer glances as he waits with bridesmaids and his fellow pageboy inside Westminster Abbey before the ceremony

The younger bridesmaids wore ivy and lily-of-the-valley hair wreaths, inspired by the head-dress worn by Kate's mother Carole Middleton at her wedding in 1981.

As a special memento, each of the four girls have had their name and the date of the wedding hand-embroidered on to the lining of their dresses.
Echoing Kate's dress, they were made using the same fabrics.
The full, box pleated skirt was used to add a sculptural quality, with the layering of ivory over white satin gazar adding depth of colour.
The dresses were hand-finished with delicate English Cluny lace, visible under the skirts, and four layers of net underskirt.
The puff sleeves and neckline were trimmed with the same English lace as the bride's underskirt, while the backs were finished with the same ****on detail.

The sashes were made of pale gold wild silk, tucked at the front and tied at the back in a sumptuous bow, St James's Palace said.
On their feet the girls wore classic Mary Jane style satin shoes with a Swarovski crystal buckle, made by Devon-based Rainbow Club.
The bridesmaids' bouquets by Shane Connolly used flowers from the bride's bouquet, including lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth.

Their waist-length capes, also by Nicki Macfarlane, were made from ivory Yorkshire wool, edged in fine English lace and tied at the front in the same satin gazar as the dresses.
Mrs Macfarlane professed herself 'thrilled and honoured' at being asked to design the dresses.
'I couldn't be more proud to have been part of this wonderful day,' she said.
The page boys were dressed in the Regency-style red tunic of a Foot Guards officer.
The look, which dates from the 1820s, draws its insignia from the Irish Guards.

WHO'S WHO: MEET THE BRIDESMAIDS AND PAGE BOYS

All the children have close ties to the Royal couple - especially William.

Lady Louise Windsor, seven, is the daughter of Edward and Sophie, the Count and Countess of Wes***, making her the Prince's cousin.

Eliza Lopes, three, is the child of the Duchess of Cornwall's daughter Laura and her husband Harry Lopes.

Grace van Cutsem, also three, is William's goddaughter - the daughter of his close friends Rose Astor and Hugh van Cutsem.

The fourth, and eldest of the girls is the Hon Margarita Armstrong-Jones, eight. Her parents are Viscount and Viscountess Linley. Her grandmother was Princess Margaret.

There were two pageboys: Tom Pettifer, eight, and William (Billy) Lowther-Pinkerton, ten.

Billy is the son of William's private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.

Tom is the son of William's former nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke and her husband Charles Pettifer.

The Royal joker: Harry quips his way through wedding... but not everyone is amused

He is infamous for his bad jokes – and even on the Buckingham Palace balcony Prince Harry struck again. The 26-year-old quipped that his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh was dwarfed by Kate Middleton, who stood tall in three-inch heels alongside her prince.
His stunning second sister-in-law Pippa, 27, did not appear amused – but she will need to get used to Harry’s humour.

Whoops! David Beckham in last-minute OBE switch to avoid embarrassing own goal at the Royal Wedding

in the style stakes. But despite looking groomed to perfection and dapper in his Ralph Lauren morning suit, David Beckham had a very small slip-up today at the Royal Wedding.
The footballer arrived at Westminster Abbey this morning proudly wearing his OBE medal displayed - but unfortunately, David wore it on his right lapel.

Switcheroo: David Beckham arrived at the wedding with his OBE medal on the right side of his suit lapel, but later changed it to the left

Very few would have even noticed, but those in the know were quick to comment on the 35-year-old's misstep.

Traditionally, the OBE medal is worn on the left side, and commentators during the coverage noted the faux pas during their telecasts.

Either he noticed others inside the Abbey wearing their own medals on the left, or someone had a quiet word to him - but before the ceremony had even begun, David had switched it over to the other side.

Despite this, the Beckhams were in high spirits and were spotted chatting animatedly to fellow guests Guy Ritchie and Sir Trevor Brooking.
David's spokesperson was quick to play down the small slip-up, but told Mail Online that the couple had a wonderful time at the wedding.

In a statement released afterwards, they said: 'Today's ceremony was beautiful and heartfelt. Catherine looked wonderfully elegant and we were honoured to be part of such a special, historical day for our country.

'We wish Catherine and William much love and happiness for the future.'

David's wife Victoria's outfit was among the most eagerly-anticipated among style watchers, after the bride of course.
As Victoria's spokesperson confirmed to MailOnline, the pregnant fashion guru wore a stunning midnight blue boat neck tunic dress from her latest AW11 collection, which she unveiled at New York Fashion Week in February.

Victoria had her hair tied back in a long ponytail and accessorised the outfit with a Phillip Treacy hat and a pair of specially customised Christian Louboutin heels.

William and Kate were proclaimed "man and wife" at a historic ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
The future king and his beautiful bride, who will now one day be Queen, pledged their love for one another in the ancient surrounds, watched by millions across the globe.
In a stunning ivory gown with lace applique floral detail designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, Kate walked up the red carpeted aisle a commoner.
With her new husband at her side and a ring on her finger, the former Miss Middleton left the abbey as HRH the Duchess of Cambridge - William was made a duke by the Queen this morning.
A congregation of 1,900 and up to two billion people saw their vows, as they were beamed live around world.
In the presence of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Kate's parents Carole and Michael Middleton and other guests in the abbey, William placed Kate's simple gold wedding band on her finger.
After stepping outside at the Great West Door, they joined a carriage procession of magnificent pomp and splendour and headed back to the Palace following the ceremony, ready to watch the traditional flypast from the balcony.
After the couple arrived at the palace, a sea of people followed them down The Mall, eager for a glimpse of them on the balcony.
    They were not disappointed.
The bride appeared to mouth 'Oh wow' as she stepped out and was greeted by a vast crowd of flag-waving people.
William and Kate's initial fleeting embrace, their first in public, sent the already ecstatic well-wishers wild.
The second kiss brought ever-louder cheers.
Meanwhile William's father the Prince of Wales held up his wife Camilla's grand-daughter Eliza Lopes, aged three, so she could get a better view.
After about five minutes of waving to the crowds, the couple walked hand in hand back through the doors of the palace, Kate taking one last glimpse over her shoulder at the scene below.
The future king and his beautiful bride pledged their love for one another in the ancient surroundings of the abbey.
Kate was dubbed "Waity Katie" for her patience during her long courtship with William as she waited for her prince to pop the question.
Today she finally became a royal wife.
As she recited her vows, William smiled encouragingly.
The service was flawless but there was a tiny moment of drama as the prince struggled to place the ring on Kate's finger.
After the couple said their vows, in which the modern-thinking bride did not promise to obey William, the Archbishop of Canterbury declared: "I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen."
Cheers erupted down The Mall and across the country as their union was sealed in front of a congregation of 1,900, with an estimated TV audience of two billion watching around the world.
Thousands of well-wishers had flocked to the processional route, cheering heartily as Kate made her way to the abbey after leaving the Goring hotel with her father Michael at 10.51am precisely.
The Rolls-Royce arrived at 11am as the abbey bells rang out.

A smile for Wills as she spots her husband-to-be
When her father took her left hand they began their procession along the red carpet that started outside the ancient building and led inside, with her sister Pippa carrying her train.
On her father's arm and watched by her proud mother Carole, Kate walked up the aisle as a commoner to the sounds of the coronation anthem, Parry's "I Was Glad".
When they arrived at the altar Prince William apparently cracked a joke to his father-in-law, according to a lip-reader, saying they were "supposed to have just a small family affair".
Moments earlier, William's best man Prince Harry apparently told his brother: "Right she is here now."
As her groom waited, Kate moved along the red carpet, around the south side of the poppy-lined Grave of the Unknown Warrior - the only gravestone in the abbey over which it is not permitted to walk.
Behind her was her maid of honour and sister charmingly holding hands with the youngest of the bridesmaids Eliza Lopes and Grace van Cutsem - both just three-years-old.
They were followed by Lady Louise Windsor and the Hon Margarita Armstrong-Jones, and then the page boys Tom Pettifer and Billy Lowther-Pinkerton.
Miss Middleton made her way to the Lantern, where she finally met William, resplendent in his dashing red military uniform, at the Sacrarium steps.
Dean of Westminster Dr John Hall began the service with the famous words: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God and in the face of this congregation, to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony..."
The cleric went on to utter the immortal lines: "...if any man can shew any just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak, or else hereafter forever hold his peace."
William spoke in public for the first time today when he replied "I will" in a clear and strong voice to the Archbishop of Canterbury's question about whether he would "love, comfort, honour and keep" Kate.
His bride spoke more softly when she said "I will" in response to the same question.
The wedding day became a magical public spectacle when the bride and groom left the abbey and climbed into the 1902 State Landau for a procession through the famous streets of central London.
Crowds who had been gathering since early this morning cheered and waved at the couple as they passed by in the Captain's Escort with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.
William and Kate returned the waves and smiled back at the tens of thousands who lined crash barriers from the abbey to Buckingham Palace.
The procession was made at a fairly sedate pace and looked an impressive sight with a division of soldiers and officers in their shiny breastplates and plumed helmets leading the way and another behind.
And despite fears that rain would spoil the occasion, a shaft of sunlight fell across The

Royal wedding day timetable of events for next one month with Honeymoon plans

THE Lord Chamberlain’s office at Buckingham Palace has mapped out the day’s schedule with military precision after a series of run-throughs to ensure everything sits perfectly for the 11am start.
http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m4/ap...-878103207.jpg
8.15AM TO 9.45AM: Most of the guests arrive. Members of Kate’s extended family and locals from her home village take their seats next to the couple’s friends from university and schooldays. Celebrity guests including David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Elton John, Ben Fogle and wife Marina mingle with crowds.
9.50AM: The next “tier” of guests including Prime Minister David Cameron and wife Samantha, Foreign Secretary William Hague and wife Ffion, Labour Leader Ed Miliband and fiancee Justine Thornton arrive. Politicians from all parties sit with leaders and foreign dignitaries who have gathered from Commonwealth countries.
10.15AM: William and his best man Prince Harry take their places at the front of the abbey.
10.20AM: Foreign royals start to file into the venue. These include Prince Felipe of Spain and his stunning wife Princess Letizia, the Sultan of Oman, the fabulously wealthy Sultan of Brunei, Prince Albert of Monaco with his South African-born fiancee Charlene Wittstock, and Sheikha Mozah of Qatar.
10.27AM: Kate’s mum Carole Middleton and her brother James are dropped off at the abbey.
10.30AM: Junior British royals such as Zara and Peter Phillips begin to take their seats.
10.40AM: Royals higher up the line of succession arrive. Prince Andrew takes his seat next to daughters Princess Beatrice and Eugenie, whose mum, Sarah Ferguson, has famously been snubbed. The proud parents of bridesmaid Lady Louise Windsor Prince Edward and wife Sophie – arrive with their three-year-old son Viscount Severn. They are closely followed by Princess Anne and her husband Timothy Laurence.

12.15PM: The service finishes. The couple leave the Abbey in the 1902 State Landau coach, escorted by the Household Cavalry for their canape reception with 650 guests at Buckingham Palace.
1.25PM: The balcony kiss. Newly married Kate and William wave to their fans from the balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Sure those hats were wise, ladies? Princesses Bea and Eugenie top the fashion flops yet again in outlandish outfits

On a day of high fashion, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie certainly didn’t let the side down with their choice of designers.
It was, perhaps, a brave decision by Beatrice to pick a dusty pink Valentino Couture outfit given her flame-coloured hair. But the well-cut knee-length design at least allowed her to show off that new svelte figure.
Bolder still was her choice of headwear, a creation by star milliner Philip Treacy who seems to have designed the majority of the hats for yesterday’s wedding. Is that an octopus on her head, or a pair of antlers?
Scroll down for video

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...2_634x1029.jpg Getting it wrong: Princess Eugenie of York in Vivienne Westwood and Princess Beatrice of York in Valentino haute couture arrive at Westminster Abbey for the wedding ceremony of Prince William and Kate Middleton

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...57_306x648.jpg Faux pas: The Princesses have come under fire for their outlandish outfits

Treacy created some fabulous hats for the wedding – as seen on Zara Phillips and Sam Branson’s girlfriend, Isabella Calthorpe – but Beatrice’s hat wasn’t one of them, because it stole attention away from her face.
Her younger sister, Eugenie, wore a cobalt-coloured creation by British designer Vivienne Westwood. A patriotic choice it may have been, but it did little to enhance Eugenie’s terrific curves.
The jacket with bow detailing was too tight; her puffball skirt a violently bright shade of blue and neither matched her gold platforms.
Rounded off with another Philip Treacy hat, the end result was slightly too panto for a setting as solemn as the Abbey.
The Countess of Wes*** took the prize for the most stylish member of the Royal Family – after the bride of course. Sophie looked radiant – and trim – in a fitted biscuit suit by British designer Bruce Oldfield, who had at one point been the favoured name to design the bridal dress.
Paired with a jaunty Jane Taylor hat with rose detailing, you would hardly know that Sophie had broken a rib in a riding accident earlier in the week. Princess Michael of Kent shimmered into the Abbey in a teale blue jacket and skirt, and yet another Philip Treacy hat that showed that she clearly wasn’t worrying about obstructing the view of every single guest sitting behind her.
Her daughter-in-law, Hollywood actress Sophie Winkleman, cut a dash in chic, navy Armani Prive alongside her husband, Lord Frederick Windsor.
And then there was the next royal bride-to-be – Zara Phillips shone in a fitted, silver Paul Costello outfit, teamed with, oh yes, another Philip Treacy hat that showed off her magnificent cheekbones.
The more senior members of the Royal Family opted for sugary tones that would have made the Queen Mother proud.

Princess Anne beamed in a floral mid-length lime green and purple jacket teamed with a knee-length purple silk dress. Worn with the obligatory double strand of pearls around her neck, it was a jolly look completed with a purple hat covered in netting.

Oh dear: Ed Miliband's partner Justine struck the wrong note with her creased taffeta skirt, incongruous funnel neckline, shrunken, wrinkled jacket and demented hat, while Tara Palmer Tomkinson, right, looked brash

The Duchess of Kent made a rare public appearance in a pale pink jacket and skirt matched with tan kitten heels – neatly set off by a snakeskin handbag that would not have shamed Victoria B eckham.
And Lady Helen Windsor, ever the royal fashionista, wore an appropriate royal blue jacket with a floral dress and silk clutch.
All in all a kaleidoscope of colour from the Royal Family – and a very profitable day for Philip Treacy who can now claim the prize as the Mad Hatter by Royal Appointment.
P.S. THE EARL AND HIS GIRLS CAME TOO

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...68_110x110.jpg
William and Harry’s uncle Earl Spencer, right, was back at Westminster Abbey where his impassioned eulogy at the funeral of his sister Diana dominated proceedings 14 years ago.

The earl, 46, was seated with four of his children, including Lady Amelia (below left), 18, her twin Lady Eliza (centre) and Lady Kitty (right), 20, below, and his fiancée, Karen Gordon, behind the Middletons and on the other side of the aisle from the Royal Family.

It was a bad day all round for politicians' supposedly better halves.

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, wife of Nick Clegg, made a dramatic statement in a form-fitting lace overlay dress, black stilettos, turban and vibrant flower headpiece, but while she undoubtedly made a statement, maybe it was the wrong sort.

Celebrity bridal stylist Camilla Ridley-Day said it was 'all a bit much', adding that her hat looked a little ridiculous.

Twitter users were more colourful in their descriptions, calling her outfit 'part Carmen Miranda, part Roxie Hart', while one wonderd why she was wearing a 'lampshade' on her head.

Sally Bercow, wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons, showed scant regard for royal protocol as she stepped out in a black lace wrap dress with plunging neckline and revealing hemline complete with split.

Either Ms Bercow was unaware of, or simply disregarded, the formal dress code that implicitly calls for demure neckline and skirt length as she revealed a shocking expanse of her ample cleavage and a flash of thigh.

Her outfit choice certainly raised a few eyebrows, but her flouting of formality would have been no surprise to many, thanks to Ms Bercow's penchant for sensational headline-grabbing outfits. After all, who could forget the semi-naked Ms Bercow posing in view of the Houses of Parliament in a bed sheet?

Samantha Cameron also broke with royal wedding tradition, choosing to turn up at the Abbey bare-headed. Although her Burberry dress with its demure sleeves and neckline fit the bill, onlookers said her head looked strangely naked - especially in contrast to the elaborate headgear of fellow guests.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...12_306x596.jpg

Dog's dinner: Sally Bercow's dress was too short and the neckline too low, while right, Clegg's wife Miriam looked dramatic, but the combination of lace, gloves, turban and corsage made for a jumbled result

A Labour MP has since come out to criticise the move, while social media sites are rife with discussion on her decision to go hatless, taking to the Internet to slate what they called her 'disrespectful' choice.
But the award for protocol-buster of the day surely goes to Lady Kitty Spencer, daughter of Earl Spencer, who wore a very snug Victoria Beckham dress that revealed an expanse of decolletage, the effect of which was only enhanced by the overhead camera angle.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...8_634x1373.jpg Informal: Samantha Cameron chose not to wear a hat for the royal wedding, a move which some commented made her head look 'naked' and her overall look unfinished

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...94_634x444.jpg Revealing too much? Lady Kitty Spencer's Victoria Beckham dress gave her an impressive cleavage - but perhaps too much flesh was on show for the formality of the occasion

PS POSH'S OUTFIT: HIT OR MISS? YOU DECIDE...

As for Victoria Beckham, the jury is still out.

Her dress was classy if a little funereal: a loose-fitting piece from her own collection that skimmed her bump perfectly. The sombre navy tone was perhaps a little dark for such a happy occasion, but the style was demure and appropriate.

What a shame then, that she should spoil the effect with her harshly pulled-back hair - some have called the fiercely pulled-back ponytail the 'Croydon face-lift', thanks to the effect it has on the forehead - topped off with a gravity-defying hat clinging to her forehead and heavy make up far too dark for a daytime wedding.

'I loved the outfit, says Ridley-Day, but it would have been better to keep her hair softer, and her make up was possibly a little bit more red carpet than royal wedding.'
And in a final note on fashion faux pas: David's OBE medal be worn on the left, not the right. Thankfully, a kindly official must have pointed the error out to Becks, as he switched the medal to the correct side during the ceremony.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...72_306x675.jpg

The jury's out: Victoria's dress was classy, but some suggested her hair was sc****d back too tightly giving her the 'Croydon face-lift' effect, while her make-up was perhaps more suited to red carpet than royal wedding... and David's medal was worn on the wrong side, but not for long...

Enlarge http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...51_634x408.jpg Minor adjustment: Once inside the service, David Beckham switched his OBE medal from the right lapel where it was on his arrival, to the left, where it should rightly be

As Jecca Craig, Arabella Musgrave, Rose Farquhar, Olivia Hunt and Isabella Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe walked into Westminster Abbey this morning, one couldn't help wondering what they might have looked like walking down the aisle in a white gown. For as William's ex-girlfriends, it could so easily have been them.
Though it has been over eight years since any of the dated him, it appears that he has sustained a relationship with nearly all of them.
Of course many have long-term partners of their own now. Miss Craig, 28, who had a teenage fling with William, attended with her beau Captain Philip Kaye - a friend of the prince himself.

Old flames: Actress Isabella Calthorpe, 30, in Matthew Williamson (left), was the subject of William's affections several years ago, while Jecca Craig (right), 28, had a teenage fling with the Prince

Miss Calthorpe, 30, who the Prince was said to be besotted by in 2004, is now dating actor and childhood friend Sam Hoare.

Miss Hunt, 28, who dated William at university before Kate, and his first girlfriend, Miss Farquhar, 26, who he dated for a short while after he left Eton, also attended, as did Davina Duckworth-Chad – once named as a potential bride for William, who was at the wedding with husband Tom Barber.
That didn't stop the ladies going all-out in the fashion stakes. Miss Calthorpe supported British design talent in boho-chic Matthew Williamson.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...29_306x637.jpg

Still friends: Rupert Finch (left, with his wife, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs) dated the bride at St Andrews. Gucci PR Arabella Musgrove (right) once dated the groom but is now with banking heir George Galliers-Pratt

Arabella Musgrave, 28, who does PR for Gucci and now dates banking heir George Galliers-Pratt, and her friend Olivia Hunt, were both faithful to the Italian fashion giant.
They certainly gave the Royals a run for their money, even though they too had made an exceptional effort with Princess Beatrice in Valentino Haute Couture, Lady Kitty Spencer in Victoria Beckham and Gabriella Windsor in Catherine Walker.

The presence of so many ex-partners demonstrates how solid William and his new bride's relationship must be. A less secure woman might be shaken by the presence of a former lover in the congregation.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...80_634x788.jpg The ex factor: Both William and Catherine, pictured after their wedding at Westminster Abbey today, have remained good friends with their former lovers

But Kate, now the Duchess of Cambridge, has a couple of her own old flames among the guests. Journalist Willem Marx, 28, who was her first boyfriend at Marlborough, has remained a close friend.
Also in attendance was lawyer Rupert Finch, 32, who briefly dated Kate at St Andrews. He is now married to the Marquess of Reading’s daughter, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs, who herself is a dear friend of William's.

Together, the former lovers form the core of William and Kate's social set, and regularly join the Princes and their partners on holidays to Kenya and ski trips at Klosters.

Top 5 Controversial Prince William And Kate Middleton Royal Wedding invitees

http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m4/ap...-488996377.jpg Prince William and Kate Middleton

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">The inclusion of an African king, a Bahraini prince and Kate Middleton’s bawdy uncle raises eyebrows and even incites protest</ins>
<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">As we know all too well, the Royal Wedding is far bigger, bolder, and more inflated than your average nuptials — and so is the debate over certain questionable guests. While world leaders like President Obama and former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are notably not among the 1,900 people invited, the inclusion of Middle Eastern royalty and billionaires with ties to late South American dictators is sparking controversy. Here, some of the most disputed nods:

1. Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa of Bahrain

Bahrain’s Crown Prince scored an invite, but, after threatened protests by human rights activists, had to change his RSVP to a “no.” As many as 31 pro-democracy demonstrators have been ****ed in Bahrain, and protesters say the prince is the “chief architect” of security forces’ brutal response to the demonstrations. “We would like to see the British government fully condemn what is going on — not invite people to a wedding who have blood on their hands,” says Nabeel Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.</ins>

</ins>

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">2. King Mswati III of Swaziland
The African king lives a lavish life in a notoriously poor nation and has a curious approach to matrimony: He holds a yearly dance where he selects a new wife (he already has 13) from thousands of topless virgins. His attendance at the more traditional Royal Wedding is provoking outrage: “Whilst the king and his entourage party in luxury in London, the people of Swaziland are being pushed deeper into poverty and those who speak out face arrest and even torture,” says Tony Dykes, director of Action for Southern Africa. The British government might say they invited him because of protocol, but “if so, they are putting protocol before human rights.”</ins>

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">
</ins>

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">3. American media tycoon Joe Allbritton
Critics accuse Prince Charles of inviting the 86-year-old media mogul, who’s been linked to Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and his ******ous regime, simply because he owes Allbritton for transportation services rendered. The father of the groom has borrowed Allbritton’s Gulfstream jet for private use in the past, and plans to use it next month to fly to Washington for an official visit. It will reportedly be the first time a private individual has funded a state trip. “Accepting hospitality from controversial American billionaires is normally the preserve of [Charles'] younger brother Prince Andrew,” says Fay Schlesinger in the Daily Mail.</ins>

</ins>

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">4) Gary Goldsmith, Kate Middleton’s wayward uncle
Reportedly, royal aides had hoped the future princess’ “black sheep” uncle would only attend the ceremony, but it seems he’s also been invited to the reception despite legitimate concerns over his bad-boy ways. Goldsmith, 45, was caught on camera two years ago cutting up what looked to be cocaine and boasting about his in with the Windsors. When hanging with Will and Kate, the wealthy property developer, who splits his time between London and Ibiza, has been known to act crudely.</ins>

<ins datetime="2011-04-26T00:27:15+00:00">5) Prince William’s exes
Before there was Kate, there was Isabella (now an actress), Arabella (a Gucci PR rep), Jecca (a party events manager), Olivia (an Edinburgh University grad), Rose (the prince’s first girlfriend)… and all of them are reportedly invited to the wedding. Perhaps in the interest of gender equality, two of Kate’s exes, Willem Marx and Rupert Finch, are also said to be on the guest list.</ins>

Elsa McAlonan on Kate's make-up: Just a tad too much mascara

Fresh, modern and natural — three words that sum up our newest princess and which sum up the make-up look she chose for her wedding day.
It’s a brave move to decide to do your own bridal beauty, especially when there are two billion people scrutinising your every move. This was not the time for experimenting.
But she is very good at her own make-up, and it was revealed this week that she has been taking lessons from Arabella Preston, who specialises in bridal makeovers.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...66_634x481.jpg Doing your own bridal beauty when two billion people are watching is a brave move

The result? Yes, there was a touch more make-up than usual. Many wouldn’t have expected a heavy hand on such an important day. Kate, after all, is a sporty, outdoorsy girl who radiates health and happiness from within.

But she got the look she wanted — which is to say, one she felt confident and comfortable with and one which her Prince would love.

Her eye make-up, in particular, was slightly stronger than she usually wears, with a grey taupe shadow in the socket and her favourite black eyeliner under and above the eye.
Her long lashes looked fuller, but it looked like this was down to a couple of coats of mascara and not extensions. Kate stocked up with Lancome’s Hypnose Mascara last week — which can be layered for thicker, fuller lashes.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...35_306x423.jpg We never see Kate without eyeliner but thank goodness she softened it for the wedding and didn't end up looking like Victoria Beckham

As for the eyeliner, we never see Kate without it. It has become her trademark — but thank goodness she softened it for the wedding and didn’t end up looking like Victoria Beckham, whose blacker-than-black smoky eyes made her look like a Posh panda.
Kate looked like she had a professional eyebrow shape a few days before the wedding. Her brows looked more defined, darker than usual and she probably used a fine pencil to draw in a little more shape.
Her skin was glowing — possibly thanks to the Crystal Clear Oxygen Therapy facial she had a few days ago — but the natural radiance could be enhanced by a sheer base (such as the new Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation), which is one notch above a tinted moisturiser and perfect for even the most foundation-phobic.
Her blusher, a proper bridal rose shade, looked more obvious than we’ve seen on her before, but was perfect for the cameras and will look great in the millions of pictures. Kay Montano said she would have used Chanel’s Rose Temptation, a deep pink, to get exactly the same effect.
Loose powder is a bride’s best friend and, according to Barbara Daly, who did Princess Diana’s wedding day make-up, it’s the most important item in the beauty kit.
Kate’s skin had just enough gleam under the bright lights in Westminster Abbey, with no hint of shimmer or shine, and that’s probably down to a light dusting of the finest powder applied to the bits most prone to oiliness (forehead, nose and chin).
She kept licking her lips (perhaps the only sign of nerves), but her pink toned nude lipstick stayed put throughout. It was a good choice of lip colour and won’t date in pictures.

Her nails had to be ready for the mother of all close-ups. Celebrity manicurist Marina Sandoval (who counts The Duchess of Cornwall among her clients) did Kate’s manicure the day before the wedding. She chose a natural look — short, beautifully shaped nails with a couple of coats of the palest pink.
When I got married, I remembered good advice from the top make-up artist Mario De Luigi, who said: ‘On your wedding day, you want to look like yourself, only better.’
We’ve come to love our natural, fresh-faced Kate and on the most important day of her life, she got it right, ready to face the future with her brilliant, beautiful smile.29

'Where are the black people?' asks Sherri Shepherd as The View hosts discuss Royal Wedding

Never mind who wore what, the View's Sherri Shepherd had another burning question about the Royal Wedding today.
'Where are the black people?' the outspoken actress, 44, asked as the panellists as they critiqued Prince William and Kate Middleton's ceremony.

The star said she had earlier searched through the footage of guests at Westminster Abbey.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...07_468x428.jpg Burning question: Sherri Shepherd was searching for black people at the Royal wedding on The View today

'Audrey Jones our producer was looking for the black people in the wedding and we found our Rosa Parks moment, because we were like 'where are the black people'?' she said.

'It was like where's Waldo, where are the black people?' she added.

'We found one little black child in the choir but where's the black people at this wedding?' she continued.

'Wait a minute the Calvary guy, from New York,' said Goldie Hawn, 65, who was a guest host for the day.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...62_468x366.jpg Hot topic: The panel discussed the Royal Ceremony today

'Well the guests, there they are,' said Sherri, pointing to a screen showing a small group of black people in the congregation.

'They are segregated but they are at the front so we have our Rosa Parks moment,' she added referring to the African-American civil rights activist Rosa Parks who refused to obey a bus driver's order to give up her seat for a white passenger on December 1, 1955.

'I don't know why they put all the black people over here but they are at the front of the wedding so I ain't complaining, they got in the front,' added Sherri.

The women also mocked the Queen and the dresses of princesses Eugenie and Beatrice.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...30_468x286.jpg 'Rosa Parks moment': Sherri pointed to a screen showing a small group of black people at the front of the congregation

Joy Behar, 68, said the Queen of England looked like: 'A bubble bee with a drinking problem,' live on air.

'Holy Moly, who wears yellow?' continued Joy.

'I've never seen a Queen wearing yellow, she looks like a taxi cabkeep that meter running Queenie,' she added.

When talking of the outlandish Philip Treacy hats of Eugenie and Beatrice host Sherri Shepherd said: 'Oh my god, that is Lady Gaga. Straight.'

'They look like they are auditioning for Let's Make a Deal, you know that show?' said Joy, referring to an old NBC game show where audience members used to dress in hilarious costumes, often like clowns.

'They look like horns,' said Sherri.
'Like a deer in the headlights,' added Hawn

74 Facebook updates a second: Royal Wedding swamps the web as sixth biggest online event in history

  • Global traffic peaks at around 1.30pm with 5.3million page views per minute
  • Traditional media bring out special editions to cope with demand
Whether it be old media or new there was only one story in town - the Royal Wedding.
And with such a massive focus on the ceremony between Prince William and Kate Middleton it was hardly surprising that millions turned to the internet to check out the latest details.
Global news traffic peaked at around 1.30pm this afternoon at 5.3million page views per minute according to traffic monitor Akamai.

This made it the sixth biggest event in the history of the internet - but it failed to overtake several major sporting events.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...59_634x488.jpg During the ceremony, there were 268,777 mentions on Facebook of the wedding in the UK alone, equal to 74 every second. On Twitter - micro-blogging site - the event at its peak was mentioned 67 times a second.

Chatshow host Piers Morgan and Emma Bunton were among the celebrities who took to Twitter to congratulate the happy couple and provide a running commentary on the nuptials

With so many people using the web during the ceremony it was little surprise that Facebook and Twitter also saw huge traffic as people updated their status or tweeted during proceedings.

THE ONLINE CELEBRITIES, BOTH ON MESSAGE AND OFF

As has become the norm with notable occasions, celebrities took to Twitter to air their views. Here are some of their messages:
TV presenter Sharon Osbourne: "Just saw Prince William & Prince Harry arrive at Westminster Abbey. Magnificent Men. Diana would be so proud."
US burlesque artist Dita Von Teese (top): "Loving the glamour of the royal wedding. Personally, I'm glad such extravagance in tradition still exists.'

Actor and comic James Corden (right): "I know for a fact that Kate and Wills first dance is Make You Feel My Love by Adele.'

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly: "Got to love Harry - he looks a bit hungover and his hair is mad. Her Maj is glorious in yellow - never puts a foot wrong."

Broadcaster and satirist Charlie Brooker: "It's a Spitting Image reunion."

TV presenter Jonathan Ross: "The dress is very nice and Harry is rocking the best man look. That is an impressive gazebo they have for the royal wedding."

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...20_110x110.jpg
Singer Paloma Faith (right): "He's the cat that got the cream. He just said 'you look beautiful'. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh swoon. I'm melting."

Actress Martine McCutcheon: "I'm feeling very moved. Keep thinking of the wonderful Diana looking over her boys and the gorgeous Kate... So proud to be British."

TV presenter Piers Morgan said: "One overriding thought watching this magnificent occasion: The British Monarchy is back."

Broadcaster and wit Stephen Fry (choosing to watch the Snooker World Championship instead): "Sh! Frame 14 under way. You could cut the tension with a Black and Decker tension cutter."
And the front page of today's Evening Standard

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...06_296x364.jpg

During the ceremony, there were 268,777 mentions of the wedding in the UK alone, equal to 74 every second.

On Twitter - the micro-blogging site - the event at its peak was mentioned 67 times a second.

In the more traditional media, newspapers put on huge print runs and brought out special evening editions to cover the ceremony.

Even British troops serving in Afghanistan used the internet to send their best wishes to the royal couple.
The UK military media operations team based at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province said: 'Everyone in Afghanistan is hard at work, but the telly is on and we are watching where we can. Congratulations to William and Kate.'
Trending topics on Twitter as well as on Facebook were dominated by the wedding. Terms included Westminster Abbey, Prince William, Kate Middleton as well as Camilla and Jerusalem, the hymn written by William Blake and Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry.

Interestingly, the hashtag 'proudtobebritish' also became a trending topic with the former England captain Michael Vaughan adding his thoughts.

Some 10,600 allusions to Kate's dress were recorded among UK users during the ceremony, with 4,583 comments on Sir Elton John singing along.

As the first major event of the social media age was played out, users of the site poured their excitement about it straight on to the web pages.

The number of visitors to MailOnline began climbing from early morning reaching a peak when the happy couple kissed on the balcony at Buckingham Palace in the early afternoon. At that point the website recorded twice its usual amount of traffic. The same pattern was seen in the U.S.

The BBC website, with a live stream reporting the wedding proceedings, struggled under its weight of traffic and crashed at one point.

This led it to issue a statement confirming it was 'experiencing some technical issues with BBC online. We're investigating and will update when we have more information.'
For the more conventional press, the Royal Wedding meant breaking with tradition.

The capital's Evening Standard published a souvenir edition in spite of the Bank Holiday while the Daily Telegraph put out a special evening edition.

As has become the norm with notable occasions celebrities shared their thoughts on the unfolding day by posting a series of messages online.
Some were complimentary and others less so.

TV presenter Piers Morgan said: 'One overriding thought watching this magnificent occasion: The British Monarchy is back.'

However the broadcaster Stephen Fry (choosing to watch the Snooker World Championship instead) wrote: "Sh! Frame 14 under way. You could cut the tension with a Black and Decker tension cutter.'
While a Victoria Beckham was lucky to receive a coveted invite to the Abbey, her former Spice Girl bandmate Emma Bunton was forced to watch the occasion on TV like millions of others.
'Absolutely beautiful couple!!! They look exquisite!', she tweeted.
TV presenter Myleene Klass added: 'The kiss Awww. The flyover.. nearly lost a finger trying to swing the patio door open to catch it!'

The wedding even captured the attention of teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber who also singled out Kate's sister Pippa for a special mention: 'Congrats to William and Kate and Kate's sister.'

Footballer Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen added: 'Congratulations Kate and William. May you have a very happy life together.'
By the time the newlyweds emerged for the procession to Buckingham Palace, the number of mentions by users around the country had hit 1,199,196, Facebook said.

Less predictable, perhaps, was the fact that during the ceremony, Prince Harry was talked about more than his brother by UK users.

Other royal wedding-related terms that featured prominently in Facebook status updates on Friday included 'God Save the Queen', 'Union Jack' and 'British monarchy'.

A surprise hit of the day was ITV presenter Mark Austin proved to be hugely popular with viewers after he was swamped by the crowds outside Buckingham Palace.

So many fans used his name on networking site Twitter that it became one of the most-used terms this afternoon when it started 'trending'.

Some viewers posted light-hearted messages expressing concern for his welfare as he disappeared into the crowd, wondering where he had gone.

Others thought he was the highlight of the coverage.

'Mark Austin has absolutely stolen the show for me this morning, the combination of live coverage and a man on the edge is great to watch,' wrote one viewer.

'I've seen reporters in war zones look less terrified than Mark Austin among the crowd at the royal wedding,' wrote another.

The wedding was also watched by U.S. teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber who congratulated the royal couple, but also singled out Kate's sister Pippa for a special mention

Royal Wedding party ends with 21 arrests and a police officer hospitalised after riot in Glasgow park

  • Celebrations turned violent after the music was turned off
  • Officers were pelted with bottles and police car windows broken
  • Arrests were made for drunkenness
An unofficial party organised on Facebook to celebrate the Royal Wedding ended in a full-scale riot with 21 people arrested.

A police officer was taken to hospital with a head injury following the gathering which took place in an affluent area of Glasgow close to the university.

Thousands turned out for the event in Kelvingrove Park, which got out of control shortly after the music was switched off.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...05_634x371.jpg Riot: Thousands attended the party in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow after it was organised on Facebook

There were also claims that officers were pelted with bottles and that windows had been broken on police cars.
Strathclyde Police made 21 arrests for a variety of offences, mostly related to disorderly behaviour and drunkenness.
In conflicting advice to the hundreds of street parties going on up and down the country, Glasgow City Council had warned against the event and urged people to find a 'safer alternative'.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...83_634x372.jpg Disgrace: The Royal Wedding party descended into fights after the music was turned off

A spokesman for the police said: 'Police were aware of this unplanned, unauthorised event and put in place contingencies to ensure an appropriate and proportionate policing response.
'A statement was issued last night by Glasgow City Council urging people to stay away and reminding them of the by-law which forbids the consumption of alcohol in public places.

'Despite this, people attended in large numbers and police were deployed to ensure public safety and to try and facilitate a peaceful event.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...97_634x436.jpg Violent outbursts: Police battled a drunken crowd who reportedly pelted them with bottles

'Initially it was a good-natured event, however as the day progressed, a significant number of persons became more intoxicated resulting in disorder.'
Chief Superintendent Bernard Higgins said: 'It's really disappointing that on the day of the Royal Wedding we witnessed the scenes we did.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...88_306x423.jpg Scuffles: An injured party-goer in the Glasgow park

'At one point my officers came under attack and one was taken to hospital suffering from a head injury. He has been discharged and will make a full recovery.
'We made a number of arrests at the time and we will now study CCTV footage and make further arrests if appropriate. The level of drunkenness was completely unacceptable and frankly irresponsible.'
The Kelvingrove Street Party was planned to run from 11am to 9pm and organisers said the council and police were aware of the event.

A number of posts were put on Facebook after the party.

Tanja Goral wrote: 'I seen six-year-old kids there today, this was suppose to be a fun event and I feel sorry for the parents who had their children witness such idiotic acts. Get something good and it's ruined. I can bet that we will never be allowed to do this again.'
Craig Easdale wrote: 'This was a great event, and the behaviour of everyone was good on the whole, up until the police arrived. I feel if the event was shut down more calmly a lot of drama could have been avoided and the police definitely didn't handle it as well as they could have.'
Before the event, the event organisers JJ Gardner & Robbie Seath urged party-goers to 'take it easy, help us keep the rubbish under control and remember that there will be other folk in the park who aren't quite as Royalist/Party mad as ourselves'.
Although there was no indication that the riots at Kelvingrove Park were related, sectarianism has flared again in Glasgow in recent weeks after parcel bombs were sent to Celtic manager Neil Lennon and two high-profile supporters of the club.

There were numerous, peaceful celebrations taking place across Scotland yesterday in honour of the Royal Wedding.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...71_634x394.jpg Chilled out: The party in the Glasgow park started out peacefully enough as crowds of young people gathered to celebrate the Royal Wedding

Scenes from St Andrews, where William first met Kate at university, were beamed to a television audience of millions.
More than 2,000 people had a wedding breakfast at St Salvator's Quadrangle in the university. St Andrews said it had received 6,000 ticket applications for the free event.
Hundreds gathered on the lawn in front of Balmoral Castle to watch the wedding on six large screens.
The newlyweds are known to have enjoyed several romantic breaks at the royal residence on the 50,000-acre estate.
In Edinburgh, the Royal Standard of Scotland was flown at the headquarters of the Scottish Government.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/...96_634x389.jpg Warnings: Glasgow council had urged people to find a 'safer alternative' to large public parties

Speaking before the ceremony, First Minister Alex Salmond, who attended the wedding with his wife Moira, said: 'This is a great day of celebration, and it is wonderful that the Queen has bestowed the Scottish title of Earl and Countess of Strathearn on the royal couple.
'The Royal Standard of Scotland is flying from St Andrew's House in Edinburgh in honour of this special day.
'I wish the royal couple my warmest wishes for a long and very happy married life together.'
More than 100 people watched the wedding on a big screen at Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow.
However not everyone was celebrating. Republicans gathered outside the Queen's official residence in Scotland to protest against the monarchy. Around 100 people chanted slogans at the gates of Holyrood Palace.
Protesters walked to the foot of the Royal Mile, briefly holding up traffic between the palace and Scottish Parliament.

Cartwheeling with joy: Excitement over the Royal Wedding proves too much for Abbey’s verger as he performs acrobatics up the aisle

The relief of getting the wedding out of the way was etched not just on the faces of the people involved but also in the actions of one of the clergymen.
Verger Ben Sheward decided that after the majority of the guests had gone he would do some acrobatics and cartwheeled down the aisle at Westminster Abbey.
The joy of the nation was summed up in his actions caught on camera as ITV continued to film what was going on inside the abbey to millions of people watching worldwide.

They came prepared for the worst but on a day with just a handful of arrests even the police could afford to smile

Just 55 people arrested on the big day
  • Officers laughed and joked with revellers
  • One policeman staged a mock stumble in front of cheering crowds
They came prepared for the worst but the smiling face of the British bobby won over the public yesterday - with not a truncheon or riot shield in sight.

With a playful smile and a tip of the helmet hundreds of officers opted for the 'softy, softly' approach to tame an estimated one million people who descended on the capital to watch the happy couple tie the knot, and barely a hint of a flare up blighted the special day.

When hundreds of thousands of well-wishers surged towards Buckingham Palace eager for a glimpse of the newly-wed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the balcony, officers braced themselves for trouble.

Applause! The police officer revels in the laughter after his comedy stumble

But the excited throngs were calmed when the Met deployed its humour and charm offensive as its latest crowd control tactic.

One comedy-copper looked like he'd spent more time picking up tips from Ken Dodd than on the beat arresting criminals.
He had the masses in the palm of his hand as he paraded along The Mall and then appeared to trip over quite spectacularly in a stumble that would not be out of place in Keystone Kops sparking a roar of laughter from the crowd.

Realising he had quite an audience he raised his arms again and the throngs of spectators cheered again at his comedy stumble.

But it wasn't just this officer who charmed the wedding day revellers as they went about their duties.

One officer delighted schoolchildren who posed for photos outside Downing Street wearing his helmet.
Another proudly escorted two delighted lady guests arm in arm to the wedding, whilst others joked with revellers whilst keeping a close eye out for trouble.

And the boys in blue's happy-go-luck approach to frontline policing paid off as just 55 people were arrested.

However, the success of Scotland Yard's security operation was no doubt due to the 'woman's touch' bought to hard-line policing.

Police chief Lynne Owens, only the second ever female assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan police, and her colleague Christine Jones oversaw the mammoth operation co-coordinating the 5,000 officers, the Territorial Support Group (TSG), firearms teams and undercover units, which provided a 'ring of steel' around the capital.

They also ensured that 80 foreign dignitaries, the royal family, and hundreds of wedding guests, remained safe and kept at bay Muslim extremists and far-right groups who have tried to organise protests.
There were fears of mass disorder after masked thugs gathered in central London, but officers swooped on two anti-royal protests, preventing an outbreak of violence.
In the days leading up to the wedding, they rounded up 99 potential troublemakers including a group of anarchists who planned to behead effigies of the Royal Family with a guillotine.
As well as the 55 arrests, 13 activists were stopped at Charing Cross and Covent Garden carrying climbing helmets, protective pads and anti-monarchy placards.

The most serious incident was an alleged *** attack on a 14-year-old girl who was standing with her family on Pall Mall. Police later arrested a 38-year-old man. Others were held for assault, being drunk and disorderly, drugs possession, theft and carrying an offensive weapon.

A man was also arrested under the Terrorism Act. Officers swooped after he was seen acting suspiciously, taking photos of transport hubs and security personnel. Police sources, however, indicated the man was likely to be released without charge.
Despite crowds of more than one million in London, large scale protests were prevented by roving squads of 1,000 officers in the West End.

Snipers took to rooftops and undercover officers mingled among the crowds as part of the Met operation.

Almost 100 known troublemakers were banned from attending central London in advance of the day.

On the eve of the wedding three people were arrested in Brockley, South-East London after police learned of a plot to stage a mock execution of effigies of members of the Royal Family outside Westminster Abbey.

One of them was Chris Knight, 68, the leader of anti-capitalist group, the Government of the Dead.

His partner Camilla Power, 60, and 45-year-old Patrick Macroidan, who was dressed as an executioner, were also held.
Known anarchist Charlie Veitch was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

He was said to be planning a protest at Soho Square. A small group of hooded anarchists from the 'Right Royal Orgy Group' gathered there for a so-called anti-royal picnic chanting 'revolution' and 'we all live in a fascist regime'.

Last check: Police officers in dress uniform do a final patrol on The Mall in London in preparation for the Royal procession on the wedding day of Prince William and Kate Middleton
But police invoked stop and search powers to arrest activists and the protest was quickly disbanded.
Elsewhere, Republic, a pressure group which campaigns for a democratically elected head of state, hosted a 'Not the Royal Wedding' street party in Holborn.

The atmosphere was jovial as 400 gathered to sign petitions calling for an elected head of state.

Met Assistant Commissioner Lynne Owens said: 'We set out to make it a safe, happy event and we believe we have achieved that.'
Scotland Yard beefed up its stop and search powers as a small group of masked anarchists gathered in Soho Square, central London.

Officers were also in Red Lion Square, where 70 protesters were counted.
Other arrests included one on suspicion of ***ual assault in Pall Mall as crowds watched the ceremony on big screens.

As the attention of the world was fixed on London, detectives threw a multimillion-pound ring of steel around the event including a traffic exclusion zone and three helicopters patrolling the skies
They appealed to the public to be the police's 'eyes and ears' to help keep troublemakers at bay.
Snipers were taking to rooftops and undercover officers mingled among the crowds as part of a massive covert and uniformed operation to avoid an atrocity.
Security against potential threats from al Qaeda-inspired extremists, dissident Irish republican terrorists, anarchists and even lone stalkers was balanced with the desire to let onlookers enjoy the day of pageantry.

Around 70 people were banned from the City of Westminster as part of their bail conditions after being arrested or charged over various previous alleged disorder offences.

But despite up to 80 VIPs requiring personal protection, there was no intelligence to suggest that police would need to use anti-terror powers.
In the wake of disturbances at the recent TUC marches and student protests, officers paid close attentions to the movements of anarchist groups.

As part of final preparations for the big day, 20 squatters were also arrested in a string of raids across London yesterday.
Police said the squat arrests were not "specifically related" to the wedding.
But an MP criticised the 'disproportionate pre-emptive strike'.

Fears of any major protests causing disruption near Westminster Abbey have eased with extremist group, Muslims Against Crusades, announcing they no longer plan to attend.
Prince William and his bride-to-be Kate Middleton have expressed their gratitude to police after officers delivered a firm message to potential trouble-makers.

With hundreds of millions watching around the world, tensions ran high, with senior officers keen to avoid another embarrassing episode like the one in which protesters attacked a car carrying the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall last December.

And police took no chances. During the Pope's visit last September, six cleaners were arrested by counter-terrorism officers and later released without charge amid reports that they had been overheard making a joke in a canteen.
