Search isn't the only big thing in the online world. People are increasingly keeping the world abreast about "What's happening" with 140-character updates via Twitter. In the year 2010, users the world over sent 25 billion tweets. That calculates to around 800 tweets every second! But what were people tweeting about? Twitter throws in some light through a top trends list for 2010 (quite like Google's Zeitgeist).

It was expected that the biggest single sport extravaganza in the world will create a lot of buzz and so the FIFA World Cup did in 2010 and the event found a place as the second in the top Twitter trends list of 2010.

Since it was a movie, that many say, required multiple viewings, Inception also demanded multiple tweets making the Christopher Nolan movie the third on the top Twitter trends.

While the FIFA World Cup created a lot of buzz, the noise was created by the Vuvuzelas. Timelines were filled with tweets protesting the noise and some enjoying the cacophony. The vuvuzela blew its way up to the number five spot on the Twitter overall trends list for 2010.

While tablets have been around for quite some time, but it took the Apple iPad to give a new life and meaning to the category. While many made fun of its name and some seemed to be unimpressed but Apple first created world wide euphoria and then sold its tablet device in sizeable numbers to keep people tweeting about it to place the Apple iPad on number six.

From the looks of it, it seems that the real iPhone ****er is finally here. It is not a phone but an operating system - Google Android. Phones based on the open source operating system have got rave reviews and are also selling well enough to bring some mobile phone makers out of the red. Google Android has also kept twitterers engaged enough for it to be number seven on the list.

Given the frequency with which Justin Bieber appeared on the Twitter trending topics, many feared that the Canadian pop-R&B singer would finally emerge as the top trending topic of 2010. Bieber's fans couldn't get better of Twitter's algorithms (and other trending topics) and had to settle for a number eight spot.

K Rowling's magic with the written world earned her billions and the movies are adding more to her kitty. The first part of the films based on seventh and final of the Harry Potter novels, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows released this year and the fans eagerly discussed and dissected the film on Twitter making it the second-most popular film on Twitter and ninth in the top 10.

2010 was definitely the year of the Football World Cup with three World Cup topics appearing in the top 10 Twitter trends for the year. While Pulpo Paul (Spanish for Paul the Octopus) is no longer around, his predictions did make watching football even more exciting. Pulpo Paul is ranked the tenth most trending this year on Twitter.
