Today the world is celebrating World Toilet Day, an official United Nations International observance day that is celebrated on November 19. The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis. World Toilet Day is a call to action for people to take healthy steps towards healthy living and proper sanitation. World Toilet Day was established in 2001 by World Toilet Organization. The notion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a special interest in World Toilet Day as he has propagated the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under which he aimed to provide and build toilets in the country so that the sanitation problem can be met adequately. He took to Twitter to reaffirm his government’s commitment towards sanitation and wrote, “On World Toilet Day, we reaffirm our commitment towards improving sanitation facilities across our nation,” and “I compliment all those individuals and organizations working towards building more toilets in various parts of India. Their invaluable contribution adds solid momentum to Swachh Bharat Mission.” Other celebrities like Akshay Kumar and leaders took to Twitter to reaffirm their commitment.

Many diseases and epidemics are spread because of unhygienic conditions and dirty and impure water which is a result of open defection and no sanitation. World Toilet Day has been trending since morning on the social media site of Twitter. This year World Toilet Day focuses on recycling and safe reuse of wastewater which can be an affordable and sustainable source of energy.
