IIT Kharagpur
The first of the original five IITs, IIT Kharagpur was established in 1951. The institute is located 120 kilometres southwest of Kolkata.

IIT Bombay, was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai.

IIT Madras
In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959.

IIT Kanpur
IIT Kanpur is located 15 kilometres north of the city of Kanpur and was established in 1959. It is one of the original five IITs.

IIT Delhi
First established as the College of Engineering and Technology, Delhi, the institute was designated as an IIT in 1963.
