India's defending champion Viswanathan Anand retained his world chess title by defeating Bulgarian challenger Veselin Topalov in the last of their 12-game duel. Anand, nicknamed the "Tiger from Madras," beat Topalov on the 56th move after a series of twists. |

Anand achieved an improbable win playing with black in the final game to retain the world title by 6.5-5.5 margin after the end of the 12th and final game. Anand kept dealing one lethal blow after another to notch up his fourth world title in 11 years to remain the undisputed king of the game once again. |

Before the start of the tournament, Anand asked for a three day postponement since he was stranded due to all air travel being disrupted because of the volcanic ash emissions. However, the Bulgarian organisers refused Anand's plea. Anand eventually reached Sofia on April 20, after an exhausting 40-hour road journey. |
