Padmaavat movie review: Ranveer Singh’s menacing Khilji act leaves you transfixed in this epic film

Verdict
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film is a visual delight and thoroughly entertaining fare, courtesy the epic performance by Ranveer Singh. It talks about Rajput pride and there is nothing that will offend anyone. At least, I couldn’t find anything that can be termed offensive in anyway. And there is no dream sequence between Khilji and Padmavati.

Pad Man movie review: Akshay Kumar delivers one of his finest performance in a film that breaks social taboos and stereotypes with finesse

Pad Man deserves a special mention simply because it got made. A subject that’s hushed up even in urban India got a mainstream treatment by a popular actor-director team. And that itself is a reason why a film like this deserves extra attention.

What to do
If you are a love bug, Love Per Square Foot will certainly tug at your heartstrings and make you feel giddy. It is the perfect romantic film that we were waiting for. It is the cutest film that has released in the longest time. However, if you are not a sucker for romance, you might want to avoid it.

It has plenty of laughs in the first half but suffers from the curse of the second half. If you swear by Luv Ranjan’s brand of comedy – Pyaar Ka Punchnama series – you will have a good time watching Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Other than that don’t RSVP to this version of My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Back in 2005, my entire school was talking about Aashiq Banaya Aapne. Of course, it was impossible for anyone of us to actually watch the scenes and songs on the big screen, given our age at the time. Imagine the wait of 13 years to watch the title track on the big screen as it has been reprised for the latest release Hate Story 4. Yep! They made a fourth one. Has the sensuality quotient increased in anyway in the past one decade? Here is how the movie went.

Don’t give the makers any more reasons to make another erotic thriller! Skip it.

What to do?
Dil Juunglee lacks the intensity, which could make it rise above the mundane. The actors are in good form but that is about it. If you want to **** time and see some gorgeous visuals of London, the film should suffice.

Well, throughout the narration, there is no reference to any cinema of any era. So you can just imagine the outcome. Planned as a comic thriller with a staid plot and a bit of romance, the film seems stuck in some kind of time-space warp. Set in Goa with drugs, art forgery, local mafia and politicians thrown in for ample measure, it is the story of an unconventional contract ****er.

Mounted with moderate production values, the production designs are appropriate and realistic. The visuals by Amalendu Chaudhary’s lens are clear and sharp but Bakul Matiyani’s editing is a bit slack. Transitions in certain scenes are clumsily handled. Shaan, Roshan Balu and Gourov Dasgupta’s background score and music are run of the mill. The song with the lyrics, “Heer, Heera” in Punjabi is an aberration in the narrative.

Overall, “Baa Baaa Black Sheep” fails to engage you.

The film is based on Brad Cohen’s book, Front of the Class : how Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had. Films based on student-teacher relationships are hardly made in Bollywood. The last notable film was, of course, Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par. In Hichki, Rani Mukerji aka Naina Mathur is a young woman who aspires to become a teacher as it was a professor who helped her build her confidence as a child suffering from Tourette’s Syndrome. The film also throws light on the drawbacks of the conventional educational system and how learning is not limited to the classrooms.


Verdict
Hichki might be a tad predictable and not as emotional as a Taare Zameen Par but it is a very well-meaning film that has its heart in the right place. It is an insight into how a good teacher can make a difference for a lifetime.

Verdict
Missing keeps you hooked but it is largely due to the camerawork, crisp editing and Tabu and Annu Kapoor’s performance. The film is let down by bad dialogues. While Mukul has succeeded in building some truly suspenseful scenes, the film loses steam in the last 15 minutes. At the climax, you know what to expect but the treatment isn’t bad. It leaves you unsatisfied thinking it could be have been a lot better.

Missing is a thriller about the disappearance of a little girl in a posh hotel in Mauritius. Does she get reunited with her parents? What is her real story? Right from the first look of the film, October has been an enigma. The trailer, which is usually supposed to offer a glimpse into the film, in this case only serves to further intensify the mystery. We are left pondering as to who is Dan, why is he doing odd jobs and why is Banita bed-ridden, and what transpires between the two. There is just one thing that we are absolutely sure of – a Shoojit Sircar film seldom disappoints. With high hopes and much curiosity, we head to the press screening of October and here’s what we think of the film…


What to do
If you while away your time reading poetries, thinking about soulmates, finding the meaning of your existence in sunsets, comparing life to flowers, and questioning your place in the universe – October will certainly be worth your while.

How a normal well-educated person suddenly surrenders himself into the hands of radicals is a very interesting study. Hansal Mehta’s Omerta, which is a biopic cum docu-drama on the life of British born terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh has impressed critics in film festival across India and the world. The film is a brave attempt as it delves into topic without any sugar coating. That in itself is very commendable given the current scenario and our Censor Board.


Our verdict
Omerta is not a film for the faint-hearted. The jodi of Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta has again proved that they have an hunger for brave and insightful cinema.

There is no doubt in my mind that Veere Di Wedding was inspired by the characters and theme of this legendary TV show. Even though the ***ual innuendos and expletives are tamed down to suit the desi audience, this all female ensemble of four childhood friends – Avni (Sonam Kapoor), Kalinidi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar), Meera (Shikha Talsania) have several moments and chapters in their life where they ‘let go’ and break several stereotypes


Our verdict
Veere Di Wedding is unapologetic and brash in its message that women can have as much fun as men, if not maybe a little more! Watch it for the all girl ensemble cast that delivers a knockout punch with their performance.

The Race franchise always seemed to be India’s answer to the slick, mind-boggling films Hollywood churned out every year. With betrayal as its central theme, both Race and Race 2 delivered when it came to twists and turns that would make you do a double take on everything that you believed in. With some crazy action sequences and hot dance numbers thrown into the mix, the films in the franchise looked uber cool and stylish. But with Race 3, things are all set to change. Not only does the latest film in the franchise have a spanking new cast, it also has a new director in the form of choreographer-turned-filmmaker Remo D’Souza. Now Abbas Mustan’s style of filmmaking is completely different to how Remo makes his film. This obviously had us stoked about the film already. Plus, with Salman Khan headlining the cast, we were excited beyond measure to see how he handles the characters in the film, since they are known to have shades of gray. The film released in both 2D and 3D formats. We caught the first day first show of the film in the 3D format to experience Bhai love at its purest and here’s what we thought of the film…


What to do
Race 3 is a treat for Salman fans but it ends at being just that. There is no reason why you shouldn’t buy the tickets to watch Salman Khan doing what he does best. But if you go in expecting to watch the third film of the Race franchise, you might not be too pleased with the way it has been treated.

Verdict

For someone who does not know how espionage actually operates, Vishwaroopam 2 is fairly engaging stuff. The London portion has a bit of history infused in it, which is genuinely interesting. However, the film is flat and fails to excite as much as we hoped it would.

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi has its moments but don’t expect it to be better than the original. Watch it if you want to laugh on ‘Ye saare ek jaise dikhte hai’ being said over and over again. After all, that’s India’s favourite racist joke!

What to do
Ghoul is a terrifyingly scary series. The first episode is a little tiresome to sit through, but if you do make it past that, it is a fun ride. The scary scenes will keep you at the edge of your seat. You might want to have company along while watching it. And also, it is perfect Netflix and Chill material. The elevated pulse helps.

Horror comedy is not an easy genre to attempt, especially with the Indian audience. It shouldn't be difficult to see why too. We like our horrors to scare the living daylights out of us and comedies to tickle us silly. Horror comedies usually leave us confused as to what to do.
