World Cup 2019: An umpiring error costs Chris Gayle his wicket | Australia vs West Indies

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...140617-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">The ball before Chris Gayle's wicket was a no-ball</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

West Indian opener Chris Gayle was adjudged lbw against a Mitchell Starc delivery that tailed into the left-hander after pitching. However, replays revealed that the previous delivery was a huge no-ball as the bowler had overstepped, but the umpires failed to pick.

In case you didn’t know...

West Indies is currently playing Australia at Trent Bridge in Match 10 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Australia posted 288 after batting first. West Indies began their chase briskly when all the drama unfolded in the fifth over.

In a 17-ball stay for Chris Gayle, it involved every possible drama with him being given out twice, but over-ruled as many times, before he ran out of luck on the third occasion. In a span of two overs, Gayle twice opted to review the umpire’s decision and was successful in overturning the decision each time. On the first call, he was caught-behind but on replays, it appeared that the ball had kissed the stumps. And on the second call, he was given lbw, while it was clearly missing the leg-stump.

The heart of the matter…

In a span of two overs, Gayle referred to the third umpire on three occasions before he got unlucky on the third attempt. He was found in front of the wicket and had to make a long walk back to the pavilion. However, replays confirmed that the delivery previous to the wicket-ball was a no-ball by a huge margin.

The bowler had over-stepped and the umpire failed to call it. It was unlucky for Gayle because the wicket-delivery would have been a free-hit and he could have continued his stay for a longer time.

This is not for the first time that such umpiring howlers have procured the unnecessary limelight. With ICC being the apex body of cricket, it is absolute disgrace that a global event, despite being played under such a greater influence of technology, is not able to rectify minimal human errors, which can cost any side a game.

What’s next?

It is a call for the ICC to take to minimize scenarios where a human error can have a major impact on the game. Even in the past, it has been advocated that the front-foot no-ball should always be checked by the third umpire, irrespective of whether a wicket falls or not.

World Cup 2019: AB de Villiers responds to the retirement controversy

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...367230-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">AB de Villiers wants fans to back the players</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

Former South African batsman AB de Villiers has responded to reports that he had approached the South African team management to play the ODI World Cup. AB posted a message on twitter saying that everyone should focus on supporting the South African team at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

In case you didn’t know...

AB de Villers had retired from international cricket in May last year citing tiredness as the reason. However, as per the reports, he made an offer just 24 hours before South Africa's selectors were to name the final 15-man squad for the World Cup. It is believed that he approached captain Faf du Plessis, head coach Ottis Gibson and the Convenor of Selectors Linda Zondi, with the request to play the World Cup but the request was "not even considered".

The heart of the matter

The steam management refused AB’s request as he had not played any South African domestic cricket or international cricket in the intervening months. The move to bring him back would have also sent a wrong signal to young players like Rassie van der Dussen, who had been impressive and made three fifties in his first four ODI innings and could have even demoralised the other players in contention for the World Cup squad.
The news of AB requesting to play the World Cup has created a stutter worldwide with the fans arguing if the South African team management had made the right decision. This made AB post a message for the fans to focus on backing the team at the World Cup. He posted the following message on Twitter:

The South African team is in total disarray at the World Cup having lost all of their three matches to England, Bangladesh, and India. A major cause of their failures has been the disappointing performances from their star batsmen. Captain du Plessis has failed to fire while the likes of David Miller, J.P Duminy have gotten starts but have failed to carry on and play a big innings.

What’s next?

With three defeats in their kitty, South Africa will now need to win all six of its remaining group fixtures in order to put up their contention to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals. They will next take on the West Indies in Southampton on Monday.

World Cup 2019: Did Zampa tamper? Accusations of Australia ball-tampering go viral

Adam Zampa has been accused of ball-tampering by cricket fans who raised questions about the Australia spin bowler's actions during Sunday's 36-run defeat to India in the Cricket World Cup.

Zampa was seen to remove an item from his pocket and pass it between his hands while holding the ball during the match at The Oval.

The incident occurred a little over a year after then Australia captain Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft colluded to alter the condition of a ball in a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town.

Bancroft was subsequently banned from cricket for ninth months, while Smith and Warner - who are now back in the Australia team - both received 12-month bans.

World Cup 2019 : Aaron Finch clarifies the ball-tampering claims on Adam Zampa during match against India

Adam Zampa created havoc in the cricketing world when he was seen rubbing the ball with an unknown substance during the India-Australia clash in World Cup 2019. Social media became went into a frenzy and named it as a Sandpaper Gate 2.0 but Australian skipper Aaron Finch then clarified the issue. He stated in the post-match interview that Zampa carries the hand warmers in his pockets in every game.

The background

The 5-time champions received a huge boost when Steve Smith and David Warner made their comeback after serving a 1-year ban because of the ball-tampering scandal. The 2 top cricketing nations, India and Australia, met in a highly anticipated contest yesterday in match number 14 of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

After opting to bat first, India got off to a dream start as both the openers scored half-centuries by outplaying the Australian bowlers. India dominated the Australian side in all the aspects as they won the game by 36 runs. However, the match even gave birth to a controversy thanks to Adam Zampa’s hand warmers.

The heart of the matter

Adam Zampa made the cricket universe curious during the 24th over as he placed his hands in his pocket and took out an unknown substance. Twitterati being shocked termed it as the Sandpaper Gate 2.0 as Zampa was caught rubbing the ball with it on camera.

However, Aaron Finch revealed that the leggie was not trying to tamper the ball, but he carries hand warmers in his pocket in every match and he had them in his palm while he was holding the ball. It is quite cold in England at the moment hence the hand warmers might be a relief for every fielder on the ground.

World Cup 2019: ICC asks MS Dhoni to remove army insignia from his gloves

What’s the story?

MS Dhoni has been asked to remove the army insignia from his wicketkeeping gloves by the International Cricket Council (ICC), after the India v/s South Africa match in the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In case you didn’t know…

MS Dhoni was spotted carrying an insignia of the Indian Paramilitary forces on his wicket-keeping gloves. He has been awarded an honorary rank in the Indian Army.
<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...520191-800.jpg<figcaption>The insignia seen on Dhoni's gloves is a regimental dagger of the Indian Paramilitary Forces</figcaption></figure>The heart of the matter

Following the India v/s South Africa match where MS was seen wearing these specially embroidered gloves, the ICC in an official statement said that it had asked the BCCI to direct MS Dhoni to remove the insignia from his glove.
Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager, Strategic Communications said, “We have requested the BCCI to get it removed.
MS Dhoni currently holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Division of the terrestrial army.

But, this time around, without any intimation from anyone, the ICC has taken the step and asked the BCCI to do the needful.

What’s next?

With India taking on the in-form Australian side on the 9th of June, it will be interesting to see if the veteran keeper still dons the same pair of gloves or not.
<section class="content-wrap eventtracker" data-event-sub-cat="Internal Links">
Mahendra Singh Dhoni will continue wearing the dagger insignia on his wicket-keeping gloves as it is not a military symbol, Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai asserted Friday, saying that the BCCI has sought the ICC’s permission for it. During India’s opening World Cup game against South Africa in Southampton, Dhoni’s wicketkeeping gloves had a dagger logo embossed, which looked more like an Army insignia.

Dhoni’s wife Sakshi and Ziva were present at the Rose Bowl during India’s World Cup 2019 opener against South Africa. The mother-daughter duo was spotted rooting for the Men in Blue from the stands. Looks like the rule has been breached and now it would be interesting to see BCCI’s stance in this issue.

World Cup 2019: Dale Steyn ruled out of tournament, South Africa name Beuran Hendricks as replacement

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...303368-800.jpg</figure>South Africa's most experienced bowler Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the World Cup. Dale Steyn suffered this injury while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks has been named as his replacement.
Steyn had been nursing a shoulder injury for quite a while. In 2016, he had an operation on the same shoulder. But, Steyn did make a comeback against Zimbabwe last year in the month of October. Later on, he was picked up as a replacement to by Royal Challengers Bangalore after Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. Steyn couldn't last long as he was ruled out of the IPL after playing just 2 games due to shoulder inflammation.

While it was announced that Dale Steyn wouldn't start the tournament, there were still expectations that he could come back for the game against India or West Indies. Steyn was even seen bowling in the middle after South Africa lost their second match against Bangladesh.

A statement from Cricket South Africa on Tuesday said that Steyn has "suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future".

Subsequently, left-arm pacer Beuran Hendricks was named as Steyn's replacement. Hendricks, an inexperienced bowler at the international level, has just played two ODIs in his career.
This injury to Dale Steyn has come as a major setback for South Africa. Already, prior to the tournament, Anrich Nortje was ruled out and Chris Morris was named as his replacement. Lungi Ngidi also suffered a hamstring injury during South Africa's second game against Bangladesh. Ngidi was ruled out for a period of one week to 10 days. These injury issues have come at a time when South Africa have had a bad start to the tournament with two consecutive losses against England and Bangladesh.

World Cup 2019: 'Will like to discuss it man-to-man', Kohli responds to Rabada's 'immature' jibe ahead of India-South Africa clash

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...012866-800.jpg</figure>
What's the story?

Indian captain Virat Kohli has responded to Kagiso Rabada's 'immature' comment ahead of the World Cup clash between the two sides. Kohli said that he will deal with this personally and won't say anything during the press conference.

In case you didn't know...

A few days ago the South African pace bowler Rabada stated that Virat Kohli is immature and can't handle abuses. It was a big statement from the fast-bowler ahead of the big clash against India.

Talking to Cricinfo earlier, Rabada stated that when Virat scores a boundary he will say something. But when you give it back he will get angry.

"I was just thinking about the game plan, really, but Virat, he hit me for a boundary and then he had a word. And then when you give it back to him, he gets angry. I don't get the guy. Maybe he does it because it gets him going, but that comes across as very immature for me. He is a phenomenal player but he can't take the abuse.”

The heart of the matter

Virat Kohli has responded to Rabada's statement during today's press conference ahead of the India vs South Africa game."I've played against Kagiso many times. If there's anything to discuss I'll do it man to man. I won't use a press conference for that."

The Indian captain also backed Kuldeep Yadav who had an average IPL season. He has stated that there is no connection between IPL and the World Cup."To me, IPL has no connection to the World Cup. Kuldeep has done well over the last two years. Few T20 games won't change his confidence." Virat also left a message for his RCB teammate Dale Steyn who has been ruled out of the World Cup due to injury.

West Indies bounce out Pakistan for their second lowest total in World Cup history
<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...748932-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Oshane Thomas took four wickets in the match</figcaption></figure>The West Indies pace attack made merry at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham, restricting Pakistan to a mere 105 runs to claim full points in their opening clash of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Jason Holder and Co. won the match by 7 wickets and the island nation would be pleased with the way they have played so far. But it was remarkable that all the ten wickets were taken by their fast bowlers, which is a good sign for them ahead of the other matches because they are known to have a weaker bowling unit.

Having won the toss, the Windies skipper decided to bowl first, considering the weather. Sheldon Cottrell started off with a clinical over but it did not fetch him a wicket. But his hard work paid off in the 3rd over, when he dismissed Imam-ul-Haq with a gem of a delivery. Big man Andre Russell picked up a couple in a flash. Following that, Oshane Thomas joined the party along with captain Jason Holder, who toppled the rest of the Pakistan batting order like a house of cards.

In reply, Chris Gayle’s half century and a supporting act from Nicholas Pooran were enough to see them through. Oshane Thomas, who was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’, finished with figures of 4 for 27. Jason Holder took three wickets from his 5 overs. Andre Russell picked up a couple while Cottrell chipped in with one. This win will give them a huge boost ahead of their second clash against Australia on June 6 at the same venue. The fact that they won’t have to travel will keep them fresh.

The last time the West Indies won the World Cup was in England back in 1979 with a legendary team led by Clive Lloyd. With immense firepower in their batting line up and an improving bowling attack, they might earn themselves a shot at the title after a 40-year long wait.

World Cup 2019: ICC rejects BCCI’s plea to let MS Dhoni have the army insignia on his gloves

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...698228-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Following ICC's decision, MS Dhoni will no longer be able to have the insignia embossed on his gloves</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

The International Cricket Council has turned down BCCI’s plea to let MS Dhoni keep the insignia on the gloves, instructing the board to get it removed.

In case you didn’t know…

In response to the ICC’s instruction to get the army insignia removed from the gloves of MS Dhoni, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had requested the ICC to let MS keep it on his gloves as it wasn’t the paramilitary regimental dagger that was embossed in his gloves.

The heart of the matter

Turning down BCCI’s appeal, the ICC has confirmed that the logo that was on the veteran keeper’s gloves was not permitted under the regulations of the council. Therefore, the BCCI will have to ask Dhoni to use a different pair of gloves in the following matches, or to cover the logo altogether.
<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...376410-800.jpg<figcaption>

The official media release from ICC</figcaption></figure>In their plea, BCCI had sought the permission to let Dhoni keep the logo on his wicketkeeping gloves, saying that it did not resemble the paramilitary dagger. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief, Vinod Rai had also said that MS was not at fault, because it Dhoni's move was not motivated by any commercial or religious gain.
Rai told PTI, “The BCCI had already sent a formal request to the ICC for clearance. As per ICC regulations, players can’t sport any commercial, religious or military logo. There was nothing commercial or religious in this regard as we all know.
What’s next?

BCCI will have to instruct MS to get the required changes done to his equipment before the next match on the 9th of June, wherein, India will be taking on Australia in their second match of the tournament.

World Cup 2019: Virat Kohli makes heart-warming gesture towards Australia's Steve Smith

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...228052-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Virat Kohli</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

During India’s World Cup encounter against Australia at The Oval, Indian skipper Virat Kohli made an appreciating gesture while he was batting in the middle. He asked the fans who were ‘booing’ Steve Smith to not do so when the Australian was stationed in the outfield.

In case you didn’t know…

The banned duo of David Warner and Steve Smith are making a return to the International cricket in this World Cup after a gap of one year. It was due to the ball-tampering row in March 2018 that the duo was handed a ban of 12 months by the Cricket Australia. However, the duo has received a hostile reception wherever they have travelled in this World Cup, even during their warm-up clash against England at Southampton.

The heart of the matter

During India’s batting in the first half of the game against Australia, Virat Kohli made a wonderful gesture while he was batting in the middle. It was when Steve Smith was sent to the field in the deep that he wasn’t welcomed in the most appreciable fashion by the Indian fans, who were cheering just behind him. He was booed by the Indian contingent as they shouted ‘cheater’ when Kohli asked them not to do so.

Even in the past, Kohli had expressed his feelings about how he didn’t like the reception with which Smith and Warner were welcomed after the ball-tampering saga. Even today, he insisted the fans clap and cheer for the Men in Blue rather than booing in an unsporting spirit.

What’s next?

India has posted a huge total of 352/5 in their first innings by recording the highest ever score conceded by the Australians in a World Cup fixture. It will be a herculean task in hand for the Aussies if they are to chase down the total.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni Complies with ICC’s Regulations, Drops Army Insignia Badge From Wicketkeeping Gloves Against Australia

MS Dhoni wore the gloves with military dagger insignia against South Africa, which evoked mixed reactions, and the ICC requested the BCCI to ask the former skipper to get it removed.

<figure class="postImage"> https://www.india.com/wp-content/upl.../06/dhoni1.jpg
</figure> New Delhi: India’s veteran wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday decided to obey the ICC diktat as he removed the dagger insignia from his wicketkeeping gloves during the World Cup game against Australia.

Dhoni wore the gloves with military dagger insignia against South Africa, which evoked mixed reactions, and the ICC requested the BCCI to ask the former skipper to get it removed as it amounts violation of sporting equipment regulations.

Dhoni wore green coloured gloves on Sunday but both the SG logo (manufacturers) and the dagger insignia were removed, saving BCCI from an embarrassing situation.
Though it couldn’t be verified if it was same gloves or a new pair.

However, with people cutting across sections airing their views, the matter got complicated and it was learnt that the Indian team was behind their senior most player on the issue.

“You will see tomorrow,” was all Rohit Sharma said at the pre-match presser. It was learnt that an influential former BCCI President, who doesn’t exactly share a cordial relationship with the Committee of Administrators, had asked him to go ahead as the maximum penalty would have been demerit points. But CEO Rahul Johri on Saturday evening explained that after BCCI had agreed to pay heed to ICC’s rules and regulations, it wouldn’t be nice to break it.

The rule states that no personal messages are allowed on apparel or sporting gears and even Chris Gayle wasn’t allowed to use Universe Boss Logo on his bat for the same reason.

World Cup 2019: Bangladesh stun South Africa to start the tournament on a winning note

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...656378-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Bangladesh defeated South Africa comprehensively</figcaption></figure>Bangladesh began their World Cup tournament defeating South Africa by 21 runs at the Oval, London on Sunday. Contributions from Soumya Sarkar, Rahim, Shakib al Hasan, Mahmudllah helped them to post a big total and the bowlers defended the target with ease.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to field first. Bangladeshi openers Tamim Iqbal and Sarkar got off to a rollicking start, putting pressure on the South African bowling line up. Andile Phehlukwayo got the breakthrough by dismissing Tamim Iqbal for 16. Tamim and Sarkar had added 60 runs for the first wicket in just 8.2 overs.

At the end of 10 overs, Bangladesh scored 65 for 1. After the power play overs, Chris Morris dismissed the other opener Sarkar for 42. Then the experienced pair of Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim played with positive intent and did not allow the South African bowlers to create pressure, taking singles and hitting boundaries.

Shakib reached his fifty off 54 balls and then Rahim reached his fifty too off 52 balls. As things were looking dangerous for South Africa, the veteran Imran Tahir got the breakthrough by dismissing Shakib for 75. Shakib and Rahim added 142 runs for the 3rd wicket. Mohammad Mithun then came to the crease and hit run a ball 21.

Phehlukwayo dismissed the dangerous Rahim for 78. Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain showed their class with attacking stroke play adding 66 runs for the 6th wicket. Mahmudullah remained not out on 46 off 33 balls. Bangladesh had posted 330 for 6 in 50 overs. For South Africa, Phehlukwayo, Morris and Tahir took 2 wickets each.

Chasing the target of 331 runs to win, South African openers Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram got off to a steady start adding 49 runs for the opening wicket. A miscommunication ended de Kock innings for 23. At the end of 10 overs, South Africa scored 51 for 1.

After the power play overs, the Bangladeshi bowlers kept a tight line and length, not allowing much room to Markram and South African captain du Plessis. Despite their bowlers not giving runs, du Plessis and Markram played with positive intent. Just when they were looking set at the crease, Shakib then got the breakthrough, dismissing Markram for 45. Markram and du Plessis added 53 runs for the 2nd wicket.

David Miller came to the crease and took time to settle. Du Plessis took the charge with attacking stroke play and reached his fifty off 45 balls. As things were looking good for South Africa, Mehidy Miraz Hasan dented the innings by dismissing Faf for 62.

Miller and Rassie van der Dussen played some attacking strokes to put the pressure back on the Bangladeshi bowlers. Again, when things looked dangerous for Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Miller for 38. Van der Dussen took the charge from there andplayed with confidence while JP Duminy too played some lovely strokes. Mohammad Saifuddin then got wicket van der Dussen for 41.

There have already been five occasions in the ongoing World Cup where the bails have not come off, despite being hit by the ball. The reason cited has been the heavy weight caused due to wires and lights that are put into the bails.

Bails Not Falling Off
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/...6bHu2jJnT8.png

Australian skipper Aaron Finch fumed over the LED bails not falling off even after being hit and called it unfair. Speaking at the post-match press conference after his team defeated Australia by 36 runs at the Oval on Sunday, Virat Kohli also reiterated his Aussie counterpart’s narrative and said this kind of thing should not be happening in international cricket.

Aaron Finch, who was outright about his statement, said, “It’s a bit unfair at times, isn’t it! And I know David hit the stumps pretty hard.” Finch continued with his apprehensions, “It does seem to be happening more and more, which is unfortunate because you’d hate to see something like that happen in a World Cup final or a semifinal. You’ve done the hard work as a bowler or a fielding side to set a player up or get the mistake and it not be rewarded.”

There have already been five occasions in the ongoing World Cup where the bails have not come off, despite being hit by the ball. The reason cited has been the increased weight of the bails caused due to wires and lights that are put into them.

Asked what he feels about it, the Indian skipper said, “I think with the technology it’s great. The lights come on and you know it’s very precise when you actually make something happen with the stumps. But you literally have to smash the stumps really hard, and I’m saying that as a batsman.

Laughing, Kohli went on, “If I see something happening like that, I’d be very surprised, also. And these are fast bowlers. These are not your medium-paced bowlers. I don’t know, and MS (Dhoni) said we checked the stump hole, as well. The stump was not in very hard, it was actually loose. So I don’t know what’s actually wrong with the stump, the outer coating of the stump.”

Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of World Cup for 3 weeks due to thumb injury

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...523359-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">India v Australia - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019</figcaption></figure>What's the story?

Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ICC Cricket World Cup because of the thumb injury that he sustained in the match against Australia. His fractured thumb will keep Dhawan out of action for the next 3 weeks.

The background @ Full Video - What happened to Shikhar Dhawan in the India v Australia match? | World

Shikhar Dhawan is known to have an excellent record in ICC tournaments. He had won the Golden Bat award in Champions Trophy 2013. The left-handed opener also played a huge role in India's success at the 2015 Cricket World Cup and Champions Trophy 2017. The fans had high expectations from him and Gabbar did not disappoint them as he scored a match-winning century versus Australia on Sunday. However, he had injured his thumb in the same match.

The heart of the matter

Dhawan had undergone a scan on Monday and the reports of the scan revealed that the left-hander has suffered a fracture on his thumb.

Since his thumb will take 3 weeks time to heal, he will not be able to play India's upcoming World Cup games against New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and England. This could force the Indian team to replace Dhawan in the squad.
KL Rahul can open the innings for India in case they do not decide to name a replacement for Dhawan. Rahul has good experience of playing in English conditions and he has looked in good form this year.

In case the team wants to continue KL Rahul as a middle-order batsman, they will have to pick a new opening partner for Rohit Sharma. According to India Today, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are the front-runners to replace Shikhar Dhawan in the World Cup squad.

World Cup 2019: Update on Rashid Khan's head injury

</figure> What's the story?

Afghanistan has not had luck by their side in the Cricket World Cup 2019 with respect to injuries and consecutive losses. The nation’s star player, Rashid Khan was hit on the head during his team’s clash against the Black Caps on 8 June. But, now we have learnt that Rashid Khan is fine and has passed the concussion test.

In case you didn't know...

After losing the first 2 games, Afghanistan met the mighty New Zealand side in their 3rd match which was played on 8th June. The side did not have a good outing with the bat as they scored only 172 runs on the board. The target was too small for the star-studded batting line-up of New Zealand.

But, in Afghanistan’s innings, Rashid Khan got injured after taking a huge blow on his head while trying to duck Lockie Ferguson’s bouncer. The cricketer left the field as it was a major injury scare for the side. Rashid Khan did not bowl even a single over in the 2nd innings as he watched the match from the dressing room.

The heart of the matter

The injury seemed to be quite serious as Rashid immediately went out to take the help of the medical team. But the injury is thankfully not as serious as it was made out to be as Rashid Khan has passed the concussion protocols test conducted by ICC. Their skipper, Gulbadin Naib also revealed, “He’s feeling better now. The doctor said don’t go to the field but now he’s feeling well. So he needed rest. So obviously we have a couple of days. He’s fine now,”

Did ICC mess up the World Cup 2019 schedule?
<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...621828-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Covers are laid out at Bristol, the venue of the World Cup game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.</figcaption></figure>Another day, another washout. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is fast becoming a rain-soaked tale of frustration as for the second day in a row, not a single ball was bowled before the umpires called off play in Bristol where Bangladesh were set to take on Sri Lanka in an intriguing all-Asian clash. Such a shame for the premier tournament of world cricket!
Already three matches have been abandoned due to England experiencing an unusually wet June and teams such as South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (with two abandoned matches), have legitimate reasons to be despondent because of the fickleness of the weather.

It is a veritable disaster in many ways, both for the image of the game and the financial aspect of it. It is a big disaster cricket-wise as well. For example, it will be a big setback for the tournament if the talented young guns of West Indies lose out on a semi-final berth because of their washout against South Africa. The passionate fans, many of whom have traveled vast distances to be here, were left frustrated again as they have been treated to some delectable cricket in the games that have managed to take place.

Wrong period?

Apparently, this is an unusually wet June month for the UK and so the ICC might not technically be blamed for holding the tournament now. It is true that all the other four World Cups held in England had taken place in June or May-June, but eyebrows need to be raised because of the extended nature of the tournament where the business end will carry it into July, historically, one of the wettest months in England.
If the rain gods inflict more damage and the big games towards the end also bear the brunt of the elements, then the ICC's gamble to extend the tournament into July might turn into a disaster.

Alternative options

Well, the 2011 World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was held from 19 February to 2 April. The English domestic season begins at the end of March or early April, so technically, a World Cup could have been played during that period. March is one of the drier months in the islands. Another option would have been to begin it in May and end in the first half of June to avoid a wet July; all of which were not considered by the ICC.

IPL to blame?

Was the decision to begin the Cup late influenced by a need to accommodate the Indian Premier League? One can only conjecture. However, the ICC should certainly have been more careful in their schedule, especially with it heading into mid-July for the knockout games. With June, the traditional World Cup month proving this wet, one can only hope July doesn't live up to its traditional tag. The game itself will be the loser otherwise.

World Cup 2019: ICC defends decision to not have reserve days for league matches

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...228276-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Three games have already been washed out at this world cup.</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

ICC CEO Dave Richardson has issued a clarification after concerns were raised over the lack of reserve days for the World Cup 2019 league stage games. Richardson defended the ICC's decision by blaming the unseasonably wet British weather for disrupting the schedule.

In case you didn’t know...

The poor weather in England has given the event the unwanted record for the most number of abandoned games at a World Cup, surpassing the two each at the 1992 and 2003 editions. Three games have already been washed out during this World Cup due to heavy rain. More matches are expected to be affected by rain in the upcoming weeks. The ICC have only kept reserve days for the semi-finals and the final.
Bangladesh coach Steve Rhodes was not pleased with the ICC's decision of not having reserve days for the initial World Cup games. Bangladesh's clash against Sri Lanka in Bristol was abandoned on Tuesday, with the two Asian countries having to split points.

The heart of the matter

A statement from Richardson read,
"Factoring in a reserve day for every match at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup would significantly increase the length of the tournament and practically would be extremely complex to deliver.
"It would impact pitch preparation, team recovery and travel days and very importantly the spectators who in some instances have travelled hours to be at the game. There is also no guarantee that the reserve day would be free from rain either. This is extremely unseasonable weather. In the last couple of days, we have experienced more than twice the average monthly rainfall for June which is usually the third driest month in the UK."

World Cup 2019: 'In bad taste on both sides' Twitter reacts to Pakistan’s World Cup promo video on Abhinandan
<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...914227-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Jazz TV AD ahead of India vs Pakistan clash</figcaption></figure>India vs Pakistan has been without a shadow of a doubt, one of the biggest rivalries in the world of cricket. Fans from both countries are desperate for their teams to win the encounter owing to the history between the two nations. The level of intensity in these games is very high. Both sets of cricketers give their everything during these clashes. Both the teams are scheduled to face each other in another blockbuster clash on 16th June.

Ahead of Sunday’s crucial match between India and Pakistan at Old Trafford, an advertisement on Pakistani channel called Jazz TV, has taken the internet by storm. The ad features a character looking like Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, the Indian Air Force pilot who was captured, briefly held and then released by the Pakistani armed forces in February.
The character is seen sporting the pilot’s signature moustache and is dressed in the Indian cricket team’s jersey. The character also refuses to answer any question asked about India’s strategy, similar to Abhinandan’s situation back in February. The Jazz TV advertisement also has the man praising the tea he’s given, much like the IAF pilot.

This comes after the Star Sports India ad where an Indian supporter describes himself as Pakistan’s “abbu" or father. Interestingly, it was all started by Star TV’s ‘Mauka’Mauka’ ad during the 2015 World Cup which didn’t go down well with the Pakistani fans.

Twitterati were furious with both the ads as they depict the sensitive political situation between in the countries in poor light. Some of the noted celebs like Sania Mirza have objected strongly to these commercials.

World Cup 2019: PCB complains to ICC about Star Sports' India vs Pakistan ad

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...520846-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">The India vs Pakistan ad</figcaption></figure>What's the story?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unhappy with the advertisement broadcast by Star Sports in anticipation of the World Cup 2019 match between India and Pakistan. The apex cricket body of Pakistan has found parts of the advertisement 'objectionable', and has registered a complaint with ICC over the issue.

In case you didn't know...

During the 2015 World Cup Star Sports released a series of advertisements which trolled Pakistan for never beating India in the World Cup, using the catchphrase 'Mauka mauka'. The campaign was such a success that the broadcasters released another version ahead of the India vs Pakistan clash at the ongoing World Cup, which aimed more barbs at Pakistan's poor record against their arch-rivals.

The heart of the matter

In the new advertisement, a Pakistani fan was shown talking to a Bangladeshi fan. The Pakistani fan said that his dad told him to never give up. To this, an Indian fan replied that he had never told him so. This implied that the Indian fan was the father of Pakistani fan, something which did not go well with the PCB.
A senior BCCI official has revealed that Ehsan Mani, the PCB Chairman, raised a complaint with the ICC.
“Yes, Ehsan Mani on behalf of PCB has ********d the ICC raising objection on the content of the TVC. I am not sure if Mani has written a letter or had a telephonic conversation but we have come to know that an objection has been raised,” the BCCI official privy to the controversy told PTI.
According to further reports, the ICC then had a word with Star Sports. The apex cricket body apparently wants to ensure that broadcasters don't release any more commercials which create similar controversy.

What's next?

Now that the ICC has had a word with Star Sports, the latter would be more careful while marketing the other high-profile matches - particularly those involving Pakistan. The India vs Pakistan rivalry has always been fraught with tension, and while the Indian fans enjoyed the Star Sports ad thoroughly, it is understandable why the people on the other side of the border didn't.

Sourav Ganguly explains why Virat Kohli walked despite not edging the ball against Pakistan

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...196010-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Virat Kohli walked despite being not out</figcaption></figure>
What's the story?

An unusual incident happened in yesterday's high-octane encounter between India and Pakistan as the Indian skipper Virat Kohli walked despite being not out.
However, later in the commentary box, the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly revealed the possible reason as to why Virat Kohli walked. According to Ganguly, the handle of Kohli's bat could have creaked which could have eventually led to the sound that we heard as the ball went past the bat.

In case you didn't know...

The India-Pakistan clash happened to be a pretty one-sided encounter right from the start of the day. Despite winning the toss, Pakistan couldn't make an informed decision as they decided to bowl first which backfired as the Rohit Sharma's brilliant century and KL Rahul's gritty fifty set a fantastic platform for the Indian middle-order.
Capitalizing on that, Virat played a fiery knock of 77, and Hardik Pandya too rose to the occasion as he chipped in with quick-fire 26. As a result, India set a mammoth target of 337 for Pakistan. Unsurprisingly, the target proved to be too much for Pakistan as they lost the game by 89 runs (DLS method).

The heart of the matter

The incident of Virat walking away voluntarily happened in the 48th over of the 1st innings. Kohli was on the strike and Mohammad Amir was the bowler. The Indian captain looked set to finish India's innings on a high but Amir's sharp bouncer came as a surprise to Kohli. Virat tried to hit the bouncer out of the park but failed to make any contact as the ball travelled straight to Sarfaraz Ahmed and the Pakistanis appealed thinking that the Indian skipper nicked it.
Not waiting for the umpire to make his decision, Kohli made his way back to the pavilion as felt that he has nicked the ball. However, later the Ultra Edge revealed that he didn't nick the ball and there was daylight between the bat and the ball.
Later in the commentary box, Sourav Ganguly revealed the possible reason as to why the Indian skipper walked.
"There is a creak in the handle (of Virat's bat). It's a common problem in this part of the world when you keep getting hit in the top of the bat the handle starts creaking. When nobody believes you have hit it, it's actually the sound (from the handle) that makes the batsman believe that there's some edge", said Sourav on the official TV broadcast.

What's next?

The wicket, thankfully, did not have any effect on the result as India comfortably beat Pakistan. The Indian cricket team will now head to Southampton where they will meet their Asian counterpart Afghanistan on 22nd June.

ICC World Cup: Team India to Wear Orange Jersey in Match Against England, Cong MLA Blames Govt For Saffronising Sport

An ICC source said, "Colour options were given to BCCI and they chose the colour combination that looked the best to them. The whole idea is to be different from blue as England also wears the same shade of blue as India."

<figure class="postImage"> https://static.india.com/wp-content/.../06/orange.jpg <figcaption class="postImg_txt">This could be how the India jersey would look like (ANI)</figcaption>
</figure> Mumbai: Little would the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) have known that the option of kitting out the Indian cricket team in orange as they take on the English side at the ongoing World Cup would be seen as an attempt to saffronise the sport as well.
India play England on June 30.

Soon after the news of orange being the colour of choice for the Indian side came out, Maharashtra Congress MLA M A Khan said, “Yeh sarkaar har cheez ko alag nazar se dekhne aur dikhane ki koshish poore desh mein pichle panch saal se kar rahi hai. Yeh sarkaar bhagwakaran ki taraf iss desh ko le jane ka kaam kar rahi hai (This Government has been trying for the past five years to change the perception of everything. This Government is pushing the country towards saffronisation).”

Meanwhile, an International Cricket Council (ICC) source told ANI, “Colour options were given to BCCI and they chose the colour combination that looked the best to them. The whole idea is to be different from blue as England also wears the same shade of blue as India.”

“Also the design (orange) is taken from India’s old T20 jersey which had orange in it. The designers who are sitting in the USA designed this jersey from something that already existed and not something completely new that fans don’t identify with,” the source added.

Before the start of the World Cup, ICC introduced a new rule asking the teams to sport home and away jerseys in the tournament. The ICC rule said, “For televised ICC events, all participating teams will be required to provide for two different coloured kits, except for the host country which has preference in the choice of colour and may, if it chooses to do so, provide only one coloured kit to be worn in all matches throughout the event. In advance of the event, the teams will benotified which coloured kit will be worn in each match.”

This time, South Africa, who generally sport green jersey with yellow shade, are wearing one that is dominated by yellow with patches of green in the team’s match against Bangladesh. Similarly, Afghanistan, who generally sport blue jersey, wore a jersey with more red added to their blue jersey.

World Cup 2019: Rohit Sharma’s dismissal sparks controversy | India vs West Indies

https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...971879-800.jpgRohit Sharma's dismissalWhat’s the story?

Star Indian opener Rohit Sharma was given out in controversial circumstances against West Indies on Thursday. Rohit was adjudged caught behind by third-umpire off the bowling of Kemar Roach.

In case you didn’t know...

Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli are the two pillars of Indian batting in the ongoing World Cup. Virat had elected to bat first after winning the toss. Rohit was looking in fine touch today and had smashed a six and a boundary in the first six overs.

The heart of the matter

However, just as Rohit was looking all set to get a big one, he got a jaffa from Kemar Roach. Roach got one to swing into the right-handed batsman and Rohit had no clue as the ball seemed to go past his inside edge. The West Indian players all up and were confident that Rohit got an inside edge onto the wicketkeeper. Rohit, on the other hand, seemed confident that he has missed the ball.

On-field umpire Richard Illingworth ruled it not-out but West Indies captain Jason Holder went for the review.

The replays were inconclusive. The Snicko showed spikes as the ball crossed the bat but it wasn't conclusive whether the ball brushed the bat or Rohit's pad. However, after only a couple of replays, third umpire Michael Gough ruled it out.

In case of such close calls, the third umpires usually see a lot of replays and take time, but Gough's quick decision to rule it out raised questions among fans and pundits. Everyone watching the game was visibly distraught, including Rohit's wife Ritika Sajdeh, who was watching the proceedings from Old Trafford stand.

What’s next?

Rohit would have an opportunity to make amends when India take on the hosts England on 30th June at Edgbaston in a blockbuster clash.

World Cup 2019: Aftab Alam out of tournament due to breach of ICC and ACB’s code of conduct

<figure class="image"> https://statics.sportskeeda.com/edit...670112-800.jpg<figcaption class="sk-app-thumbnail">Aftab will not be able to continue any further in the tournament</figcaption></figure>What’s the story?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday approved Afghanistan Cricket Board’s (ACB) to replace Aftam Alam with Sayed Ahmad Shirzad in the World Cup squad following the charges of breaching the code of conduct set by the ACB and ICC.

In case you didn’t know…

Aftab Alam has played four matches in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and has picked up four wickets in the course.

Previously, Afghan keeper Mohammad Shahzad was controversially sent back during the World Cup campaign. After returning, he released a video accusing that he could have continued following the injury but a plot was laid down in order to get him out of the team.

The heart of the matter

Afghanistan have been seriously struggling in the tournament and adding salt to the injury, one of their top performing pacers has been disqualified from participating in the tournament by the ICC.

The left-arm pacer was accused of misconduct off the field and in an investigation of the matter carries out by the ICC found him guilty and halting his run the tournament.

The council in its official statement said, “The decision to send Alam back from England has been taken under exceptional circumstances taking into account both ICC and ACB's code of conduct rules and regulations. The decision stops Alam from further participating in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 as he will be under investigation by ACB for the alleged misconduct off the field.”

Following this, Sayed Ahmad Shirzad has been called in as his replacement and the ICC approved ACB’s request under ‘exceptional circumstances’.

What’s next?

Having had a terrible run so far, Afghanistan would look to give their best when they face Pakistan on the 29th of June.
